Inspired by director Vincente Minnelli's 1958 film The Reluctant Debutante, What a Girl Wants will feature Nickelodeon darling Amanda Bynes as a 19-year-old girl who has been raised by her mother (Kelly Preston) in New York City, but decides that she wants to find her long-lost aristocratic British father (Colin Firth). When she arrives in London, her trendy American ways disrupt her father's snobbish social circle and, in turn, his entire life. Naturally, comedy is sure to ensue, with a healthy chunk of romance inserted along the way.

If you're older than 15, you might not know much about Ms. Bynes, but she is a rising young star who recently starred with Frankie "Malcolm in the Middle" Muniz in the relatively successful Big Fat Liar in early 2002. She's also popular amongst young television viewers, featuring heavily on a number of Nickelodeon series such as The Amanda Show and Rugrats, as well as The WB's current series What I Like About You.

Though the premise is hardly original (and sounds suspiciously similar to The Princess Diaries), What a Girl Wants is the kind of movie that is fun for the family and can attract a wide audience if marketed properly. Trying to forecast the teen/family market is always a tricky prospect, but with a charming lead and fine supporting cast, this film looks like it could be a winner. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
