I always envisioned myself looking more like Daphne in animated form.

If you haven’t heard of the popular television series Lizzie McGuire, it’s probably because you’re older than 13 years of age. The show was part of the Disney Channel’s Zoog Weekendz schedule in 2001-2002 in addition to airing on ABC’s Saturday morning kids’ block. The series, which stars up-and-comer Hilary Duff, is based around the life of a 13-year-old girl along with her family and friends. Lizzie’s inner thoughts are expressed through an animated version of herself. The show lasted for 65 episodes before Disney decided it was ready to make the jump to the big screen for what they hope will be the first in a series.

For the film version, which is budgeted at $15 million, Lizzie will graduate from middle school and head to Rome for summer vacation. CiaoLizzie! is directed by Jim Fall, who previously helmed the indie flick Trick and the WB network’s soap parody Grosse Pointe.

Whether or not the show has a strong enough fanbase to follow Lizzie from the tube to the screen remains to be see, but it does seem fairly certain that Duff is destined for bigger things either way. She’s already starring in another teen comedy with Frankie Muniz (Agent Cody Banks) and looks to be the potential star of a franchise if Disney gets their wish with Ciao Lizzie!

It’s gonna be ugly when Mary Kate and Ashley hear about it. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
