Okay, now imagine that but in hip hop. Such a reinvention of one of the cheesiest songs from the 1970s is roughly the entire justification for a big screen adaptation of the classic television show. Okay, that might be an exaggeration but only a slight one.

Producer David Permut, the visionary (?) who started the trend of comedic movie versions of television shows with the 1987 release Dragnet is again onboard here. His longstanding goal for over a decade now has been to bring the forced romance of The Love Boat to the big screen. His initial efforts were thwarted when legendary producer Aaron Spelling instead decided to focus on television. The small screen re-make of The Love Boat proved to be a failure, but that has not deterred Permut from his belief that Starsky and Hutch proves the market is primed for further re-makes of atrocious shows from our youth.

To aid Permut in his endeavor, noted 1980s teen film writer/director Savage Steve Holland has been brought onboard. Holland, whose greatest claim to fame might be making John Cusack a star, created such classic B-movies as Better Off Dead, How I Got into College and One Crazy Summer.

Eventually, he wandered off into the realm of television. His first show, The New Adventures of Beans Baxter, was a launch program for the fledgling Fox Network. From there, Holland developed a taste for children's programming. He created the criminally underappreciated Eek! The Cat and was recently been directing various episodes of The Lizzie McGuire Show before Hilary Duff and Disney had a falling out. Between those gigs, Savage Steve hit bottom when he worked on the infamous doomed show, Shasta McNasty. Obviously, history has not been kind to Holland so if we are ever to see that Better Off Dead sequel, audiences need to show up en masse for The Love Boat. (David Mumpower/BOP)
