Another piece of British literature is getting a big screen adaptation this summer. Originally published in 1945 under the full title Brideshead Revisited, The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder, the novel by Evelyn Waugh (that's a dude, by the way) has been deemed an Important Book. It was first adapted for the small screen in a serial for British television in 1981 which is notable for starring Jeremy Irons as the main character in what would be his breakthrough role. Miramax Films and Warner Independent Pictures are bringing this adaptation to theaters in July.

The protagonist Charles Ryder will be played by Matthew Goode, a British actor completely unknown to North American audiences, unless you were a really big fan of the films Chasing Liberty and Match Point. People you have heard of also in the film are Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon (that would be Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films for the Muggles out there). While the novel is steeped heavily in Catholicism, the film will focus mainly on the doomed relationship between Charles and the younger members of an aristocratic family.

While Brideshead Revisited doesn't seem like a very likely candidate for a wide release, stranger things have happened and the book is perhaps well-known enough for it to perform well in North America before being a smash hit in its home country. (Tim Briody/BOP)
