From Gus Van Sant, who directed such films as Good Will Hunting and My Own Private Idaho, comes this faux-documentary that centers on the mid-‘90s Seattle grunge scene. The script will be completely fictional and will be similar to Van Sant’s most recent film, Elephant - which imagined its events from the ashes of Columbine - in that it will improvise a story out of the life of Kurt Cobain.

Although not specifically a biopic, the movie will bear a great deal of similarity to Cobain’s rise to fame, along with his band Nirvana. Uncomfortable with the sudden popularity, the main character will deal with his demons much like Shakespeare’s Hamlet – through soliloquy and solitude.

Michael Pitt, who is probably best known for his role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, stars as the doomed grunge star, with supporting roles being turned in by Lukas Haas and Asia Argento. Although no one really knows what happened during Cobain’s last days, Van Sant is trying to create an atmosphere that reveals the inevitability of such a mind going missing and eventually committing suicide.

Courtney Love, Cobain’s wife, gave Van Sant her full blessing for the project. Because the film is not specifically meant to be a detailing of the events surrounding Cobain’s rise and eventual crash, it should be a fascinating “what if”. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
