A 2004 nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, Twin Sisters (De Tweeling in its native Netherlands) was acquired by Miramax, which plans to give the film a very small-scale theatrical release.

Based on a exceptionally popular Dutch novel by Tessa De Loo, the film will tell the story about the very divergent paths taken by twin sisters who are separated at an early age. Driven apart at the age of six after the death of their parents in 1925, Twin #1, aka Anna, is put to hard work on the German farm of her abusive uncle and his wife. Meanwhile, Twin #2, the sickly Lotte, is sent far away to the home of some Netherlands relatives who nurse her back to health and provide her with a college education and positive upbringing. Needless to say, such different childhood situations lead the pair to take differing cultural, social and even political paths.

As the film follows the twins into their adult lives, Lotte finds herself married to the Jewish son of family friends, while Anna is working as a maid and is the war bride of an Austrian Secret Service officer. Many years down the line, the sisters meet by chance and discover that the old adage that "time heals all wounds" doesn't exactly hold true.

The film will be presented in its native Dutch with English subtitles. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
