Digg Button
Dave, Jimmy, Sean. Three childhood friends growing up in a tough suburb of
Boston. Their lives are irrecoverably changed when trauma befalls one of
them.

Fast forward a few decades. The three still live in the same town, but have
grown apart. They are reunited when one of their daughters is murdered.

Clint Eastwood brings Dennis Lehane's atmospheric best-seller to the screen.
The film has a crackerjack cast: Tim Robbins, Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon play
the leads; Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden and BOP fave Laura Linney
fill supporting roads.

Eastwood adds another work to his solid directorial resume. Box office
consistency has eluded him, however. Last year, another Eastwood offering
based on a popular novel had a less-than-impressive opening. Blood Work
opened to a little over $7 million, though it had decent legs after release.

Still, with Mystic River, he guides one of the more stellar casts with which
he has worked. Eastwood's work was well received at Cannes this year, one of
the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak lineup. Advance word of strong
performances, including a haunting speech from Laura Linney at the close of
the film, may buoy prospects of the release. (Tony Kollath/BOP)
