The death of a parent is always traumatic for a child. Hide and Seek speculates on the impact such an event might have on a nine-year-old girl.

Emily Callaway, the little girl in question, has had a great life up until now. Her mother and father are successful career types who have doted on her. When Mommy dies, Daddy aka Dr. David Callaway (the original Raging Bull, Robert De Niro) tries to help his daughter cope to the best of his ability. He's not just any schmo at this, either. The good doctor is a noted psychologist, so if he can't help her, you know it's bad.

To David's chagrin, Daddy's little girl is dealing with her depression in a most unsettling way. She has developed an imaginary friend that puts even Ralph Wiggum's leprechaun (you know, the one that tells him to burn things) to shame. Her fictitious playmate has requested that the dutiful Emily do some rather bizarre and dangerous things, causing Dr. Callaway to seek further assistance from his colleague, Katherine (Jean Grey herself, Famke Janssen) along with neighbors Steven (Robert John Burke) and Laura (Melissa Leo of 21 Grams). The latter couple have recently suffered a tragedy of their own, as their young daughter recently passed away. Hide and Seek promises to be a film about redemption and healing with some genuinely creepy moments along the way.

Production on Hide and Seek was scheduled to begin in November 2003, but De Niro was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Scheduling was pushed back to March of 2004 due to this unfortunate situation with the good news being that De Niro has received a clean bill of health in the interim. (David Mumpower/BOP)
