Sure, Ice Cube is happy to take Vin Diesel's sloppy seconds!

76/166 David Mumpower My Ice Cube fandom blinds me to reason here. I must shamefully admit that I laughed.

Are We There Yet? reads like an updated version of the 1991 Ed O'Neill film, Dutch. As in that long-forgotten but amusing flick, a boyfriend tries to score points with the new lady of his life by making a road trip with her child. The films diverge here as Dutch was only a single troublemaking child while Cube's character, Nick, will be stuck traveling with multiple rugrats, Kevin and Lindsey.

The cause for the trip is that mother/lover Suzanne (played by the delicious Nia Long) is stuck working in Gotham during the New Year's holiday. In order for her to escape loneliness, knight-in-shining-armor Nick has to pull the troops together and get them in New York City before the ball drops for New Year's Eve.

Working against our hero is the fact that the kids think Mom should never date again. Their efforts are focused on making Nick look bad in her eyes. BOP assumes that either hijinks and/or hilarity ensue(s) at this point, but we have no real basis of support on this.

The film marks the reunion of Boyz N the Hood alum Long and Cube while again underscoring just how bad a shape Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s career is in. The perceived spare parts from that film are managing to avoid the Boat Trips of the world while the Academy Award winning actor is stuck with faux gay for pay these days.

The director of the movie, Brian Levant, is working within his realm of expertise in this family film. Other helmed efforts on his resume include Snow Dogs, the two Flintstones films, Beethoven and Jingle All the Way. Personally, I will always love the man for his for work writing The Adventure of Captain Zoom in Outer Space, but I understand that he has to pay the bills with his less artistic works.
