Friday, October 30
Take Five
Want to watch a movie, but just not sure what to see? How about one, two, three, four, five...five glorious suggestions!

Classic Movie Review
Of the few truly iconic horror films, The Exorcist stands tall, partly for being unique enough as to not inspire as many follow-ups and rip-offs as, say, Halloween or Friday The 13th.

AFInity
It's a special Halloween AFInity, looking at a movie many people believe is the scariest ever.

Mythology
It seems a bit late to me, the recent vampire trendiness. True Blood, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, big hits, all of them. Yet, they're also all late to the game.

This is So Last Week: 10/23/09-10/29/09
This week: Costume advice from a celebrity, bad news from rock-and-roll, sharks vs. whales and a paint-splattered birthday party. Also: the worst celebrity influence for 2009, and $140K worth of girls kissing. Boo! Our weekly pop culture quiz just went bump in the night.

Thursday, October 29
Review: The Stepfather
There's a scene in The Stepfather that's so well acted I began to think it might rise above most horror-thrillers.

Trailer Hitch
This week: Marijuana literally kills people, too many celebrities celebrate Valentine's Day and a Napoleon Dynamite knockoff turns out funny.

Selling Out
To see or not to see Paranormal Activity. This question has plagued me for two weeks now.

A-List
Let's ring in All Hallows Eve with a look at some of the great, truly scary movies.

Top Chef Recap
It's hard to believe that three weeks from now, we will know which four chefs will advance to the final round of Top Chef.

This Is It debuts
Michael Jackson's This Is It started its limited-engagement box office run with $7.4 million on Wednesday, including the $2.2 million from Tuesday sneaks.

How Well Do You Know: The Lost Boys
Vampires, The Two Coreys, Jack Bauer - 1987's The Lost Boys had everything! A pack of vampires terrorize a California beachside town, and it's up to two brothers to stop the madness. One of the more entertaining horror films you'll come across, the movie holds up well even 20+ years after its release. How well do you know The Lost Boys?

Wednesday, October 28
Book vs. Movie
Somewhere between attempts at adult novels in 2000, author Darren O'Shaughnessy had his first big hit: a YA novel about a character named after him who became caught up in a world of vampires.

Comics Weekly
Need comics? Here's what's new!

This Weekend, Watch This
For the weekend of October 30th, Michael Jackson's This is It is the only movie opening in wide release. I will compare seeing Michael Jackson's movie with trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Decade in Review
Our glance back at the box office decade continues as we explore September - December of 2005.

Weekend Forecast
One of the biggest wildcards since The Passion of the Christ is set to land on theaters this weekend, in what's an otherwise vacant Halloween period.

How Well Do You Know: The Ring
Though we're more use to the Michael Myers' and Jason Voorhees' of the horror film universe, The Ring introduced us to an entirely new villain: a killer young girl. It may sound gimmicky, but the reveal totally worked. (And brought, as expected, a number of chills). How well do you know The Ring?

Tuesday, October 27
Amazing Race Recap
Will a Race without Street Lawyer and his bride-to-be remain entertaining? Based upon previews, there will be plenty of drama.

Decade in Review
Our look at the box office results from the past decade continues with May through August of 2005.

How to Spend $20
This week: Cylons expose their Plan, Ice Age goes Jurassic and one movie proves why adoptions are sometimes a bad idea.

How Well Do You Know: Friday Night Lights, Season 1
If Matt Saracen, Eric Taylor, Tyra Collete and Tim Riggins hold a special place in your heart, you are familiar with Friday Night Lights, an absolute gem of a television series. Set against the backdrop of Texas high school football, the series' first season guides a slate of memorable characters through some fantastic storylines. You may know that clear eyes and full hearts can't lose, but how well do you know Friday Night Lights, Season 1?

After this quiz, try our quiz on the FNL Season 1 pilot!

How Well Do You Know: Drag Me to Hell
Sam Raimi took a sabbatical from all that Spider-Man business to write and direct Drag Me to Hell, the filmmaker's first entry in the horror genre since Army of Darkness. Combining terror with comedy, Drag Me to Hell was a deliciously entertaining summer treat. How well do you know it?

Monday, October 26
Win/Lose
The summer of 2009 brought two of Hasbro's beloved '80s toy properties to the screen.

TiVoPlex
From the obscure to the obscurest to the merely overlooked or underappreciated; they all have a home in the TiVoPlex!

Decade in Review
With half the decade over, 2005 gave us some mid-term re-shuffling of the established roster: say hello to Tyler Perry, Judd Apatow, the horror boom, and the Great Reboot.

Monday Morning Quarterback
Paranormal Activity took on Saw VI in a no holds barred cage match. Only one could emerge the winner. Our staff discusses the surprising results.

Overpaid Jerks: 10/19/09-10/25/09
This week: Unbalanced Scoring Sunday, novel ways to win and lose college football games and a "Hurricane Andrew of football mismanagement." Plus: the axe falls at ESPN, and where in the world is Manny Ramirez? Our weekly sports quiz is coming at you like Adrian Peterson aiming to run over another defensive back.

Sunday, October 25
Weekend Wrap-Up
Autumn means horror is king at the box office and this weekend is no exception.

Saturday, October 24
Friday Box Office Analysis
The franchise that has ruled late October box office for the last five years has finally met its match.

How Well Do You Know: Shaun of the Dead
Part horror flick, part classic British comedy, Shaun of the Dead pulls off the difficult feat of being a reverent tribute to the George Romero Living Dead series, a relationship film, and a zombie picture rolled into one. It made you laugh, it made you cry, and it gave you new uses for a cricket bat. You may know the difference between hip-hop and electro, but how well do you Shaun of the Dead?

Friday, October 23
Survivor Recap
Previously on Survivor, everyone lived. Tonight on Survivor, someone will DIE! Or at least that's what the previews would have you believe.

AFInity
Today's film is the great Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. Next week: a special Halloween edition!

This Weekend, Watch This
Unsure what movie to see this weekend? Here's a handy dandy system to help you decide!

Weekend Forecast
What's turning into an uncommonly lucrative month of October at the box office tries for a third straight weekend with a $30 million film — and for that matter, doubles down on its chances for one.

This is So Last Week: 10/16/09-10/22/09
This week: Accidental exposure, a sexy health care solution and breasts both real and spectacular. Plus: a reality TV star turned drug kingpin. Ease your way into the weekend with a review of the last seven days in pup culture. We hope you were paying attention.

Thursday, October 22
Are You With Us?
"Demons are taking over the world," Adam tells his brother. That's right! They're not just living amongst us trying to earn a living, they're bound for world domination!

Mythology
This recent horror series has inspired the ire of critics, word-of-mouthers, bloggers, tweeters, facebook status updaters, and pretty much anyone with a public outlet to express their scorn.

A-List
Here's a question: how many women have won an Academy Award for Best Director? If the number you're thinking reminds you of, say, a goose-egg, you're right; the answer is 0

Top Chef Recap
We rejoin our Top Chef contestants outside by the pool where we are treated to a gratuitous shot of Jennifer in her bikini.

How Well Do You Know: Scream 3
The Scream franchise will break away from being a nice, compact trilogy when Scream 4 likely gets released next year. But back in 2000 we thought Scream 3 was the be all end all -- with one final Killer targeting his murderous eye on the vulnerable Sidney Prescott. How well do you know Scream 3?

Wednesday, October 21
Comics Weekly
Want to know what's new in comics this week? We've got the latest releases right here.

Selling Out
I'd be willing to bet that the voicemails of Penguin Group, Random House and Scholastic were overflowing this past Monday morning.

Trailer Hitch
This week: Meg Ryan ties up her man meat, Jackie Chan babysits some kiddies and Mel Gibson pops a cap.

Take Five
It's a birthday celebratory Take Five, where you can find unique movie recommendations to take you through your week.

How Well Do You Know: Saw
An unlikely horror franchise was born in 2004 with the release of the first Saw movie. While none of the successors have lived up to the grisly, fiendish original, the series has proven surprisingly popular. You may not agree that he scene referred to in Question 11 was by far the creepiest in the whole movie, but how well do you know Saw?

How Well Do You Know: Friday Night Lights, Season 1: Pilot
Friday Night Lights is a gem of a television show, and its pilot remains my favorite episode of TV ever. In putting together a quiz for the balance of Season 1, I realized how much groundwork for the rest of the series was laid in that one episode. For those of you that enjoy FNL as much as I do, I think you'll agree that the pilot deserves a quiz all by itself.

Tuesday, October 20
Amazing Race Recap
With one very likable team out of the race because of a lost passport, we start this week still a bit bummed but the extreme heat and indoor snow of Dubai should be fun.

Where the Wild Things Are
As kids, we all liked to pretend. It was our way of channeling the bottomless energy and curiosity that came with being young.

How to Spend $20
This week: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen isn't the only new release this week. There's (at least) three other DVDs worth checking out, too.

How Well Do You Know: Coraline
Artistically gorgeous, mildly horrific, Henry Selick's screen adaptation of the Neil Gaiman book Coraline was one of 2009's cinematic gems. Coraline Jones is bored and overlooked until she stumbles into a world that is not nearly as wonderful as it seems. You may think that everyone would be better suited with buttons for eyes, but how well do you know Coraline?

Monday, October 19
TiVoPlex
From the obscure to the obscurest to the merely overlooked or underappreciated; they all have a home in the TiVoPlex!

Hollywood Psych
Paranormal Activity was originally seen as little more than a trial run for a big-budget remake.

Review: A Serious Man
There's something oddly fascinating about the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man.

Monday Morning Quarterback
Everyone was at the movies this weekend! All four openers found an audience, and it was a record weekend for October. Our staff discusses the reasons why.

Overpaid Jerks: 10/12/09-10/18/09
This week: Homeless quarterbacks, captain-less basketball teams and peerless performances. Plus: The darker side of college sports, Parts I-III. Enjoy our review of the last seven days in sports, featuring special Guest Editor Jim Zorn.

Sunday, October 18
Weekend Wrap-Up
It's one of those fantastic weekends at the box office, where the movies are interesting and audiences are eating them up.

How Well Do You Know: My Fair Lady
My Fair Lady, released in 1964, tells the story of an arrogant, misogynistic, emotionless man who makes a wager that he can turn a Cockney "street urchin" into a society "lady" in 6 months. In the process, both professor and student go through a transformation. Sounds like quite the heartwarming love story, doesn't it? This film adaptation of a popular play was just another example of why America was smitten with the "loverly" Audrey Hepburn. How well do you know My Fair Lady?

Saturday, October 17
Friday Box Office Analysis
Friday was a glorious one at movie theaters. An influx of new products included three new releases and one storied limited release platforming into national availability.

Friday, October 16
Classic Movie Review
It's been more than 40 years since this low-budget film from famed director George A. Romero came out, letting loose zombies onto the big screen.

This Weekend, Watch This
Wondering what movie to watch this weekend? Here's a handy chart to help you decide!

AFInity
High Noon is an engaging and fascinating movie from its opening frames.

Weekend Forecast
Without meaning to go for the obvious pun (honest!), this weekend has the potential to be a wild one.

This is So Last Week: 10/9/09-10/15/09
This week: Playboy makes odd choices, NBC makes bad decisions, a country star makes a comeback and dead Elvis makes even more money. These items helped to make the last seven days in pop culture as bewildering as ever. We hope you were paying attention.

Thursday, October 15
Review: Zombieland
Given its premise, you'd think Zombieland was adapted from a video game.

Mythology
One of the more popular new mythology shows of the last season has returned this season to far weaker ratings.

A-List
Some adaptations of books are bad all the way around. Two sets of this list's entries feature one major similarity; though money was made on both films, their quality is lacking.

Selling Out
I have had an epiphany and it came while watching TNT on a Sunday night. No matter how well you educate yourself in the language of cinema, when it comes to your opinion on a movie, nothing is set in stone.

Top Chef Recap
We return to the Top Chef house with Team Rainbow reduced to a single member.

Survivor Recap
The opening segment sets the tone for the direction of Galu this week.

How Well Do You Know: I Love You, Man
I Love You, Man is a hilarious comedy about one guy's struggle to score a best man for his wedding. For Paul Rudd, that man turns out to be Jason Segel, a laid back, no nonsense funny man who teaches Rudd how to live a little less tensely. The movie may be one of the best comedies of 2009, but how well do you know it?

Wednesday, October 14
Comics Weekly
The new comic books are here! The new comic books are here!

Take Five
In my mind, there's only one real way to spend my time: procrastinating and watching movies. Here's what I dug up.

Decade in Review
Our look at the box office decade continues as we explore the results from September through December of 2004.

Trailer Hitch
This week: the Toys are back in town, Pedro and Penelope team up yet again, Nic Cage acts weird(er), Sly Stallone and friends get violent and Heath Ledger has his swan song.

How Well Do You Know: Unusual Movie Titles
Movie titles have become quite the mouthful. While television shows have gone the monosyllabic route (Lost, Psych, Chuck, Life, House), movies have been the most circuitously absurd titles. Just trying to recall the exact one has become excruciatingly difficult, and we're here to prove that point. How well do you know movie titles?

Coming up with plausible alternatives for these titles proved a little more taxing than I had expected.

Tuesday, October 13
Amazing Race Recap
With Ron and Marcy eliminated, the race is full of a bunch of 20- and 30-somethings, save for dad Gary. Will this lack of age diversity make it less entertaining?

How to Spend $20
This week: Futurama, Ian McShane, the Talking Heads, and Sam Raimi all have a little somethin' somethin' to offer. Really, you should be prepared to spend $150. Or start putting things on your Christmas wish list.

Decade in Review: 2004
Our look at the decade in box office continues with May through August of 2004.

What I Learned from Movie X
"Every kid dreams of growing up to become a sports star." Is this an overly simplistic generalization? Perhaps, but Hollywood has certainly made a lot of movies based on this assumption.

How Well Do You Know: Blade Runner
Blade Runner is a sci fi cult classic with a devoted fan base. So, if you're taking this quiz you must think you know it pretty well! So sit back, relax, and tell us only the good things that come in to your mind about your mother.

Monday, October 12
TiVoPlex
From the obscure to the obscurest to the merely overlooked or underappreciated; they all have a home in the TiVoPlex!

Review: The Invention of Lying
The Invention of Lying takes place in an alternate universe where nobody lies. It's not because of austere moralism, but because the very idea of lying has never entered the collective consciousness.

Decade in Review: 2004
Our box office decade in review moves to 2004, where one big movie dominated in the first quarter. Do you remember what it was? (Hint: the picture doesn't give you the answer.)

Monday Morning Quarterback
Couples Retreat opened in theaters and dominated the weekend...well, sort of.

Overpaid Jerks: 10/5/09-10/11/09
This week: Frigid weather, ugly uniforms, booze-fueled battery and blown calls. Cheer up, though, as the last week also gave us really good looking people with a minimum of clothing. As sure as Peyton Manning will shred opposing defenses, here comes another edition of our sports week in review quiz.

Sunday, October 11
Weekend Wrap-Up
After a fantastic weekend in the last frame where great films like Zombieland, Whip It and the Toy Story Double-Feature debuted amongst others, we had only one major release hitting theaters this weekend.

How Well Do You Know: Dan in Real Life
Single father Dan Burns has all he can handle with his career and his three daughters. A vacation with his family and a sudden, complicated romance might just push him over the edge in this indie charmer. You may write spontaneous songs about Ruthie Draper and her appearance, but how well do you know Dan in Real Life?

Saturday, October 10
Friday Box Office Analysis
Couples Retreat opens fantastically, but it's not the biggest story of the weekend.

Survivor Recap
Will Galu continue their winning ways or will Foa Foa finally break through with a challenge victory? It's getting to be crunch time for Evil Russell and Company.

Friday, October 9
Amazing Race Recap
The producers delivered with fast-paced promises in the super-sized two-hour season premiere, so let's see if they keep the momentum going.

Top Chef Recap
Coming off a particularly un-dramatic finish to the last episode, there isn't too much drama going on in the Top Chef house this week.

This Weekend, Watch This
For the weekend of October 9th, Couples Retreat is the only movie in wide release. Hmmm, I wonder how this will affect my comparison chart.

Weekend Forecast
After a deluge of new movie releases at the box office last weekend, this weekend sees only one lonely film making its way into theaters.

This is So Last Week: 10/2/09-10/8/09
This week: Not much happened. Except for murder conspiracies, suicide threats, blackmail and breast text messages. Plus: we give consideration to the Sexiest Woman Alive. The last week in pop culture had something for the whole family. We hope you were paying attention.

Thursday, October 8
Are You With Us?
Darren Aronofsky followed up his ultra low budget indie hit p with an adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr.'s 1978 novel Requiem For a Dream, and shows that we've certainly come a long way since Reefer Madness.

Classic Movie Review
It's been almost 60 years since one of the more groundbreaking films ever made was released, so influential that it is still felt in TV shows, books, and movies to this day.

Movie Review: Fame
At the end of Fame, I asked myself one question: why should I care about any of these characters?

A-List
Every year, a handful of movies take home Academy Awards.

How Well Do You Know: Superbad
Superbad was rated R, and boy did it earn it. (Even this HWDYK is rated NC-17 by the MPAA). The Greg Mottola-directed comedy is vulgar, dirty, sexy and just downright funny. If you sat through this thing without busting your gut, then something is wrong with you. Period. How well do you know Superbad?

Wednesday, October 7
Trailer Hitch
This week: Saw makes it six in a row, George Clooney accrues serious air miles and Jason Lee gets his squeakquel on.

Take Five
Nobody wants to go on my job interviews and tell me which ones are worth the call-back? Fine, I guess it's back to watching movies for me. Here's what I dug up this week.

Selling Out
The following is an excerpt from Emily Post's Guide to Civility and Intelligence in Film Discussions...

Chapter Two
What is remarkable about Toy Story 2 is how it balances joy and silliness, punch lines, sight gags and winking humor with a deeper melancholy and an awareness and respect for the ways in which time marches on.

How Well Do You Know: Actors and Their Roles II
It's simple. We'll give you four first names of characters, you tell us the actor/actress who played those roles. What seems straightforward may turn out to be anything but. Still, don't panic. Many times the character names are title roles. You may know your Dermot Mulroney from your Dylan McDermott, but how well do you know actors and their roles?

Tuesday, October 6
He Said/She Said
Do boys like zombies more than girls? Find out in this episode of He Said/She Said.

TiVoPlex
From the obscure to the obscurest to the merely overlooked or underappreciated; they all have a home in the TiVoPlex!

How to Spend $20
This week: Ally McBeal heads to DVD (as does Six Feet Under – for the second time). Don't you dare expect to pay anywhere near $20.

How Well Do You Know: Disturbia
Disturbia was the big box office breakout of early 2007. This update of a Hitchcock classic was the first in Shia LaBeouf's unlikely string of Hollywood blockbusters. You may believe that paranoid voyeurism is the best weapon in neighborhood crime prevention, but how well do you know Disturbia?

Monday, October 5
The Amazing Race Recap
In part one, one team didn't get to leave L.A., another team got a reprieve with the first ever non-elimination at the first pit stop, and teams started to repel or attract viewers. So, what happens in part two?

Top Chef Recap
Jason Lee is back from Switzerland and he has a recap of the most recent episode of our favorite reality show.

Capitalism: A Love Story
Going into Capitalism: A Love Story, I expected Michael Moore would push my buttons. I also expected lurid imagery, shocking statistics, intense crowd reactions and powerful emotional moments.

Monday Morning Quarterback
Lots of movies opened this weekend, and most of them were actually good. Would the box office match? The BOP staff discusses all the weekend results.

Overpaid Jerks: 9/28/09-10/4/09
This week: an Olympic-sized upset, a weightlifing accident and a playoff before the playoffs. Plus: hockey gears up as NASCAR winds down. Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen, here comes our sports week-in-review quiz.

Sunday, October 4
Weekend Wrap-Up
With September behind us, the box office moves towards better product, and what a swing toward quality we see this frame.

How Well Do You Know: Charade
Stanley Donen's Charade, released in 1963, has been referred to as "the best Hitchcock movie that Hitchcock never made." The thriller stars Audrey Hepburn as Regina "Reggie" Lampert, a newly widowed woman trying to find her husband's missing fortune while dealing with false identities, fighting off other seekers of her murdered husband's fortune, and flirting with mystery man-of-many-names Cary Grant. Nothing is what it seems to be in Charade - how well do you know it?

Saturday, October 3
Friday Box Office Analysis
Welcome to October, where studios actually toss out some decent product, quality-wise. Let's see if any of them can manage to stick.

Friday, October 2
Survivor Recap
We open the show with a conversation between the "tribe leader" Mick and Jaison

Weekend Forecast
It's High Concept Weekend as five movies, each with their own little quirk, invade the multiplex.

The decades-old story of Roman Polanski's crime, arrest, and flight from prosecution is a mass of contradictions.

This Weekend, Watch This
New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch?

October Forecasts
October has lots of spooky offerings. Which ones will come out on top?
Read forecasts from:
Shane Jenkins
Michael Lynderey

Thursday, October 1
A-List
Though it happens almost every week on some TV show, for actors to go behind the camera and helm a movie is a little rarer.

How Well Do You Know: Goodfellas
"As far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a gangster.” Want to know how glamourous it is be involved in organised crime? Ziti with meat gravy. Vertical collar shirts. Multiple whackings. The m-f word. This movie has it all. How Well Do You Know... Goodfellas?

This is So Last Week: 9/25/09-10/1/09
This week: A rock band from outer space, a dressing room throwdown, a Sesame Street send-up and a late-night concussion. Also: something about a man with a beaver. During the last seven days in pop culture, the jokes pretty much wrote themselves. We hope you were paying attention.
