2007 Reader Awards: Best Actress
February 28, 2007
The pre-Oscar buzz surrounding Helen Mirren implies that her win must have been a landslide but the Reader Awards prove otherwise as Mirren edged out Meryl Streep by a margin of less than 2 percent. At the Calvin Awards, the Best Actress race was similarly a photo finish.
So dominating were the top two candidates that the next two highest finishers were supporting actresses. Similar to the Calvins, readers picked up on the lightning in a bottle that was Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine. Unlike the Calvins, readers handed fourth place to Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, who got the heisman from the BOP staff, failing to place in the top ten.
You'd think there would be a returning champion for the women this year with all the high profile talent represented, but instead there was 100% turnover compared to last year. I will go out on a limb, though, and predict next year's returning champion will be Natalie Portman.
