2007 Reader Awards: Best Movie
February 28, 2007
By a 25 percent margin over Children of Men, The Departed is the readers' choice for best movie. Rounding out the top five are Little Miss Sunshine, Casino Royale, and Pan's Labyrinth, each representing a modest decline in votes from the film ranked just ahead. United 93, Borat, and V for Vendetta are an unlikely trio locked in a virtual dead heat nearly 50 percent behind Pan's Labyrinth.
With a big exception, the BOP staff's selections in the Calvin Awards validate the readers' tastes, as the top three selections by readers also figured prominently in the Calvins. The exception was our first prize winner The Queen, which you barmy Yanks had ranked all the way down in 15th. Instead, you liked Casino Royale and Borat a little better than we did. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also respectfully concurs with the readers' selection of The Departed, marking the first time the two voting bodies have synched up on the top award.
