2006 Reader Awards: Best Album
March 1, 2006
Readers recognized a mixture of critical and fan favorites in music this past year, and so it is fitting that number one selection Coldplay fits both categories. X&Y beat Pazz and Jop winner Kanye West by a 16% margin.
Soundtracks from Rent and Walk The Line finished just out of the running, as did all my personal favorites for the year, most notably Picaresque by The Decemberists and Twin Cinema by the New Pornographers.
How did the inaugural Calvin Award for Best Music CD differ from readers' favorites? By a wide, wide margin. The only shared top ten entry among both lists is Plans by Death Cab for Cutie, which occupies the tenth spot in the readers' poll and was tied for ninth in the Calvins. Additionally, your 12th place finisher, Illinois by Sufjan Stevens, was our runner-up.
