2006 Reader Awards: Best Movie
March 1, 2006
Popcorn beat Oscar in the second annual BOP Reader Awards, as Batman Begins took the Reader Award for Best Movie by a 21% margin over Oscar favorite Brokeback Mountain. In turn, the runner-up was about 16% better than third place finisher King Kong. Readers gave Walk the Line the Academy treatment, knocking it down to 13th place.
Our own Calvin Awards also recognized the reinvigoration of the dark knight franchise that was Batman Begins (we had it fourth) and Sin City (we had it fifth, just like the readers) and the latest Harry Potter installment (we had it eighth). Similarities end there, however, as reader faves Brokeback Mountain, King Kong, and Crash failed to register as strongly with the BOP staff. Instead we elevated the readers' 12th favorite selection, Serenity, to our number one spot. Other movies faring better with staff than readers included Good Night, and Good Luck, the full-length Wallace and Gromit movie, and The Constant Gardener.
