This weekend, an awards contender makes a splash. Meanwhile, a *second* reboot of a 1970s series falls hard on its face. Also, Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen had a movie.

Ford v Ferrari will take the top spot in decisive fashion, paving the way for what will likely be a Best Picture nomination. Beloved by critics (92 percent fresh) and audiences (A+ Cinemascore), this James Mangold-directed film about auto designer Carroll Shelby and race car driver Ken Miles and their efforts to compete against Ferrari at the 24 Hours of LeMans earned $10.9 million yesterday. Based on the amazing word-of-mouth and also a longer-than-average runtime, I'd expect it to hold up amazingly well over the weekend. Look for $30 million. This will be one of the bigger non-Disney success stories of the year.

Oh, wait. It's 20th Century Fox, so it's totally Disney. Never mind!

It's all downhill after first place, though. Charlie's Angels, yet another reboot of the 1970s television series, arrived with very little fanfare. Featuring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott (Aladdin), and Ella Balinska, this edition of Angels was directed by Elizabeth Banks (also portraying one of numerous Bosleys). Trailers were terrible and aimless, and advertising was practically nonexistent. The Sony film (they're having a terrible year) earned $3.2 million yesterday and might manage $8 million for the weekend.

Our final new release of the weekend is The Good Liar, an awards-bait looking movie about a couple of senior citizens swindling each other. You'd think that pitting Ian McKellen against Helen Mirren would lead to some level of excitement and anticipation, but the film itself is not stellar, apparently. It's 63 percent fresh at Rotten Tomatoes and has a B Cinemascore, which just doesn't bode well for any long-term prospects. A $1.6 million Friday should be good for a $4.2 million weekend, but Warner Bros. will see this one fall off the charts quite quickly.
