Sure, a couple of new films were released this weekend, but no one will ever remember them. For this weekend before Halloween, it will continue to be all about... Halloween.

Yes, the 40 years later reboot/sequel is back atop the charts again, as it will earn right at $30 million for its second weekend, which is a perfectly acceptable decline for a horror film. By the end of the weekend, it will have earned right around $125 million. Even with a sharp decline next weekend after the "holiday season" ends, this is a huge victory for Universal and Blumhouse. They have perfected the horror genre, really. Let's just review some of their big wins in recent years: Get Out, Split, Paranormal Activity (1, 2 and 3), Insidious and its sequelsThe, The Purge series, The Visit, and Happy Death Day. If you're wondering, their next big hit will be Glass, the sequel to Unbreakable and Split. It's gonna be huge. And there will also be Jordan Peele's next outing, Us. Jason Blum is a genius.

A Star Is Born and Venom might be inexorably linked because they opened on the same weekend, but now is the time when the awards contender starts to close the gap. It earned $4.2 million yesterday and should come in with a weekend total of $13 million. Venom earned $2.9 million and will have a Friday-to-Sunday finish around $9 million. Venom won't have much time left, but A Star Is Born could hang around for a while yet.

So, let's talk about new releases and expanding films. Hunter Killer, the latest generic Gerard Butler action film, earned $2.6 million yesterday, good for fourth place. A $7 million weekend is probably better than it deserves and is yet another "meh" outing for Lionsgate. Mid90s, a skater film from Director Jonah Hill and starring that Ted Cruz looking kid who was just in The House With a Clock in Its Walls, earned $1.3 million while expanding from four to 1,206 venues. Its weekend should be close to $4 million.

The other newbies barely even rate a mention. Pure Flix's Indivisible earned $605,000 and will have a weekend of $1.2 million. Johnny English Strikes again doesn't particularly care about North American box office, but it did earn $515,000 and could manage $1.5 million.
