Comedians are best at horror. Who knew?

After Jordan Peele's Get Out earned $33 million in its 2017 opening weekend, $176 million domestically, and won an Academy Award (along with four other Oscar nominations), the movie-going public learned that funny guys had a way with scary movies. This weekend's edition brings us John Krasinski, formerly of the office, who directs, co-writes, and stars in A Quiet Place with his delightful wife, Emily Blunt.

With a 97 percent fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes (and 100 percent from Top Critics), A Quiet Place had built a loud buzz over the last several weeks. People were coming out of the theater commenting how disturbed they were (and how much of an impression it left). The result? A $19 million debut Friday. That's WELL ahead of tracking and pretty much demolishes its budget before the weekend even really gets going.

Over the first three days of its debut, A Quiet Place is going to earn $49 million or so. Depending on how the studio decides to estimate and count its dollars, it might even crack $50 million. In fact, that's a solid number that I think Paramount will run with. It's their first truly significant win in quite some time, possibly going back to 2015's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (depending on how you look at things).

Second place, then, goes to the other big opener of the weekend, which is the comedy known as Blockers. Featuring Leslie Mann and John Cena, this well-reviewed flick will be a consensus choice in the coming weeks, as it got off to a nice start yesterday with $7.8 million. That should translate to $22 million for its first three days, which is just fine as that basically matches the budget. It's not A Quiet Place good, but Universal will be pleased nonetheless.

Also debuting is Chappaquiddick, clearly the story of Ted Kennedy's scandal. A small-scale release on just 1,560 screens, the Entertainment Studios release earned $1.9 million yesterday and should come in with about $5.8 million. Hey, it'll wind up making more than their last release, Hurricane Heist!

Hanging out in tenth place is yet another new film. The Miracle Season, the inspirational story of a volleyball team that bands together after their star player is killed in an accident, earned $1.4 million yesterday and will finish the weekend with $4.2 million.

Last week's winner, Ready Player One, declined 54 percent to $6.8 million, probably more than the studio would have liked to see. Even so, it has been huge overseas, so Warner Bros. is probably going to be content once all the dollars are added up. The weekend total should be right at $21 million.

Tyler Perry's Acrimony followed the pattern of most Perry films to drop 66 percent to $2.5 million. Even so, it has done better than just about anyone could have expected, and will have a weekend total of $7.5 million.

Our other movie of note is Wes Anderson's animated film Isle of Dogs, which expanded to 554 locations and earned $1.4 million. It will likely finish with about $4.5 million this weekend, and then see wider release next weekend.
