I imagine this is what it's like to be with Ryan Reynolds all the time.

With the power of its leads, The Hitman's Bodyguard opens relatively well, saving a lazy August box office weekend.

The Hitman's Bodyguard

The action buddy comedy takes Friday pretty easily with $8 million. That’s ahead of most estimates and should prevent this weekend from being the worst weekend of box office in a long time. That’s next weekend. Despite the appeal of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, their box office performances are wildly hit and miss. This ends up being a small positive for both of them, as it earns about $20 million for the weekend.

Logan Lucky

Steven Soderbergh’s return to directing (this is his first feature film since 2013’s Side Effects) is not a triumphant one; despite strong reviews, it only earned $2.8 million on Friday, which is still enough for third place on the day. The heist film is looking at a disappointing $7 million for the weekend.

Annabelle: Creation

Last weekend’s winner predictably falls 66% to $5 million. The Annabelle sequel has already taken in $53 million on a $15 million budget so they’ll definitely keep making these. This weekend, it’s headed for $14 million.
