Annabelle: Creation

Waking up the August box office, a $15 million Friday for the Annabelle sequel is right in line with the October 2014 opening day of the first film, which finished with a $37.1 million weekend. The spinoff of the Conjuring films has already made its budget back in one day, continuing the trend for one of the most successful franchises of the decade. Creation will follow the opening weekend performance of Annabelle, giving it a solid $36 million for the weekend.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature

The Nut Job was an out of nowhere surprise in January 2014, earning $19 million opening weekend and its $64 million total was good enough for an eventual sequel. However, things don’t go as well the second time around as it can only manage $3 million on Friday. I blame the terrible pun in the title. It will have a stronger weekend, but any hopes of matching the opening weekend of the original are gone. It’s headed to a weekend of $11.3 million.

The Glass Castle

Failed Oscar hopeful The Glass Castle earns $1.6 million on Friday in less than 1,500 theaters. That’s okay, but clearly not what it was hoping to start out with and build upon. It’s looking at about $4.8 million on the weekend.

The Dark Tower

Last weekend’s “winner” The Dark Tower completely collapses to just $2.3 million, down 62% from last Friday, making it one of the biggest flops of the year. It’s headed to a second weekend of around $6.2 million.
