Hollywood essentially takes a weekend off after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, leaving it easily on top of the box office despite a big decline on Friday.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel takes a big nosedive in week two, down 69% from last Friday to $16.4 million, giving it $199.5 million after seven days in theaters. The first film met a similar fate, dropping 67.4% in its second Friday from $37.8 million to $12.3 million. GotG recovered to have a weekend of $42.1 million (for a weekend decline of 55%) so something similar will happen here. The family friendliness of the franchise is what carried Vol. 2 last weekend and will do the same this weekend, as it easily stays on top of the box office with a second weekend of $56.1 million.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Despite the large drop by Guardians of the Galaxy, the new releases are not able to capitalize. Guy Ritchie’s take on the King Arthur story earned $5.3 million on Friday. That’s a mediocre figure, though I think this will do gangbusters internationally and if a sequel shows up in a few years, nobody should be surprised. For this weekend, domestically, King Arthur is looking at about $14.8 million for the weekend.

Snatched

Amy Schumer’s comedy Snatched managed $5 million Friday, less than half of the opening day of her previous leading role, 2015’s Trainwreck. Despite Goldie Hawn’s first film role in 15 years, Snatched is probably hoping for a Mother’s Day bump, but it doesn’t have too much else going for it. That might be enough to nudge it ahead of King Arthur when the weekend’s results come in, but it’s a disappointing weekend for both movies. I’m looking for a $15 million weekend.
