Friday Box Office Analysis

Inferno
The third entry in The Da Vinci Code franchise starts with just $5.6 million on Friday, a stark decline from the $28.6 million first day of The Da Vinci Code in May 2006 and the $16.4 million first day of Angels and Demons in May 2009, a figure Inferno will not reach over its entire opening weekend. The combination of abysmal reviews (for both book and movie) and the fact that the entire franchise was one good idea that’s been run into the ground makes it unable to be saved by Hanks’ star power (especially after beating expectations with last month’s Sully), and it’ll be kept afloat by international grosses (where it’s about to cross $100 million ) but it’s a domestic disappointment. A weekend of $15.1 million is what Inferno is looking at for the weekend.
Boo! A Madea Halloween
Last weekend’s winner, the holiday themed Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween starring Tyler Perry (I bet Tyler Perry hates Twitter because his movie titles take up half the character limit), earns $4.6 million on Friday, a decline of 51.5% from last Friday, which is generally to be expected with Perry films. What this has going for it, much like last weekend, is the holiday theme. It managed a stronger weekend multiplier than normal for the Perry oeuvre on its way to a $28.5 million weekend and the trend will continue here before it crashes next weekend. A second weekend of $13.7 million should be in store.
Notable Holdovers
Elsewhere, Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back drops 67.2% from last Friday to just $2.9 million. While the sequel expanded on the opening weekend ($15.2 million) of the first entry, that one came out in December and at this same point in its release had earned $35 million, putting it ahead of Never Go Back’s box office after 8 days in theaters. ($33 million). This is why we hammer home the importance of legs in December, people. Give it a weekend of $8.7 million.
Ouija: Origin of Evil drops 60% from last Friday to $2.2 million. It’ll probably see a slight bump on the weekend due to being a horror movie released on Halloween weekend, but that’s not saying a lot. It should come in with a second weeknd of $6.2 million.
