The Magnificent Seven

The remake of the classic Western takes in a not-quite-magnificent but still pretty good $12.6 million on Friday. Denzel Washington continues his run as the most consistent box office draw of his era. The Magnificent Seven is actually headed towards one of the better openings of his career, the highest of which is 2007’s American Gangster with $43.5 million. The Magnificent Seven (which does probably also benefit from the presence of Chris Pratt, in his first role since Jurassic World) lines up similarly with Washington’s The Equalizer, which started with $12.4 million on this weekend two years ago (and will see a sequel next September) on its way to a weekend of $34.1 million. Following a similar trajectory, in hopefully what kicks off a feud between Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington for The King of September Box Office, The Magnificent Seven takes the weekend very easily with a strong $34.4 million.

Storks

The animated entry from Warner Bros. could only muster $5.7 million on Friday, which is okay, but seems disappointing given it’s been a while since we’ve had a family release. The weekend proper will be incredibly kind to it and should push it to around $20 million for the weekend when the estimates come out.

Sully

After two weekends at the top, Sully is bumped to third place on Friday with $4.1 million down just 36% from last Friday. It’s now got $82.7 million and will be very close to $100 million by the end of the weekend. The Tom Hanks/Clint Eastwood collaboration comes in with another $13.5 million for the weekend.
