Don't Breathe

The horror entry that broke out big time last weekend takes the lazy Labor Day weekend fairly easily as well with $4.1 million yesterday. That’s down 58.3% from last Friday but considering this was made for change found in couch cushions and made its budget back in before last weekend was over, that’s fine. Labor Day is the one true anti-holiday at the box office we have left, and that will be reflected in the weekend’s earnings. Don’t Breathe will be the weekend’s only movie over $10 million, with $12.1 million on the weekend and $13.3 million in four days.

The Light Between Oceans / Morgan

The top opener on Friday is The Light Between Oceans, earning 6th place with just $1.3 million. (The weekend’s other wide release, Morgan, is an epic failure with just $615,000 in 2,000 theaters. Somebody just got fired.) The Light Between Oceans has an impressive cast but the whole is less than the sum of its parts as reviews are only marginally positive and if it’s being released on this weekend, its faint Oscar hopes are already over. Let’s go with a weekend of $4 million and $4.5 million in four days.
