The Angry Birds Movie

The first app to movie adaptation (appdaptation?) is the top film on Friday with $11 million. That’s pretty good, but I wouldn’t greenlight the Candy Crush movie just yet. (What do you mean “too late?”) The first family film since The Jungle Book and the first animated release since Zootopia (still in 8th place in its 12th weekend of release), Angry Birds found some good timing as we head into a holiday weekend next week. That will likely bode well for some legs going forward. This weekend, there will continue to be a large amount of in-app purchases as Angry Birds lands with $39.6 million.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

After Neighbors opened two years ago with $49 million and $150 million in total, a sequel was obvious. But much like we found with last year’s Ted 2, it’s hard to capture lightning in a bottle twice, as we have another R-rated sequel that falls considerably short of the original. Neighbors 2 earned $8.7 million on Friday, a steep drop from the $19.5 million opening day of the first movie. Should Neighbors 2 follow the same trajectory as the first for its opening weekend, that’s a total of $21.7 million. Neighbors should come in slightly better than that, with a still disappointing weekend (compared to the original, anyway) of $23 million.

The Nice Guys

The best reviewed new release of the weekend, buddy comedy The Nice Guys comes in with just $3.8 million on Friday. The film just isn’t an easy sell these days, but the combination of the cast, the reviews and the film’s pedigree account for the total, and will lead to a weekend of about $11 million.

Captain America: Civil War

Slipping to third on Friday by just a few thousand dollars, things are still fine for Captain America as it will pass Batman v Superman today, pointing and laughing the entire time. It will also surpass Neighbors 2 on the weekend easily as it lands a third weekend of $32.2 million.
