Krampus

The weekend’s only new major release, holiday horror entry Krampus, wins Friday with $6 million. This is generally not the best weekend for box office as it tends to belong to holiday leftovers, with any new releases being thrown to the wolves a week too early to benefit from the best days of box office which occur between Christmas and New Year’s. That said, this Friday is better than expected for Krampus, and it’s a race between this and Mockingjay Part 2 for the weekend crown, which Katniss should win. Krampus ends its weekend with $15 million, which matches its production budget.

Notable Holdovers

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 earns another $5.6 million on Friday, sending it to $214 million. Continuing its comparison with Part 1, that film earned $6.6 million on this weekend a year ago and had $242.7 million in the bank. While $300 million is pretty iffy right now, Mockingjay Part 2 will win its third weekend (much like Part 1 did) with $18.5 million.

Creed drops 60% from Black Friday to $4.6 million, but that’s fine since it was the holiday weekend. A decent weekend here makes it a contender for the big money to come at the end of the month (some populist rumblings of Oscar nominations don’t hurt, either), and it’s looking at $13.8 million

The Good Dinosaur earned $3.4 million Friday, a mere 78% decline from Black Friday. This is really only slightly out of the “completely acceptable” range, as last year The Penguins of Madagascar took a 76% dive and even Frozen had a Black Friday-to-Friday drop of 75%. Things are still okay, even if this will go down as one of the lesser Pixar release (in terms of box office). Second weekend multipliers for the last two years of Thanksgiving releases? 4.53 for Penguins and 4.70 for Frozen. Splitting the difference sends The Good Dinosaur to a second weekend of $15.6 million, which leapfrogs Krampus and holds it in second place on the weekend.
