Box office estimates for December 30th are exactly what should be expected. The titles in wide release universally experienced increases. This behavior is normal for any Tuesday throughout the year.

Since the anti-holiday of New Year’s Eve didn’t occur until today, nothing was negatively impacted. Keep in mind that box office receipts for today will be down substantially. Then, we will be back to at least Sunday’s levels with New Year’s Day box office.

Keeping the above in mind, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies won yet again. It is the clear winner of the Twelve Days of Box Office for 2014. Its $8 million yesterday was a slight improvement of 6% from Monday’s $7.5 million. The Hobbit: I’m Running Out of Jokes for This has a two-week total of $183.5 million. It will cross the $200 million mark no later than Saturday.

The gap between Into the Woods and Unbroken continues to creep higher. The Disney musical grossed $6.5 million, up 6% from Monday. Meanwhile, the awards season contender grossed $5.4 million, an increase of only 4%. So, the film earning more on Monday held better on Tuesday. Unbroken appears to be a bit front-loaded for an Oscar contender, but that will change if it pulls in a lot of nominations. Into the Woods has now grossed $58.8 million domestically while Unbroken stands at $56.6 million.

The rest of the top five is again held by Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and Annie. The final (?) Night at the Museum film continues to be the unheralded hit of the holidays, accruing another $5.3 million yesterday. It was up 19% from Monday, the second largest increase in the top 10. After a modest $17.1 million opening weekend, its 12-day total has reached $64.5 million, an impressive demonstration of lasting appeal.

Annie hasn’t proven quite as popular, yet it is doing extremely well. Its $4.4 million yesterday reflects an increase of 15%, bringing the film’s running tally to $54 million. By the way, this is the 10th time I have written about Annie in two weeks without making a “sun will come out tomorrow” joke. I hope you appreciate my restraint.

Have a great New Year’s Day. Then, do me a favor on Friday and root your ass off for Tennessee in their bowl game. We need all the help we can get. The average age of our football team is barely enough to legally watch an R-rated movie.
