New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some movies sound awesome (Treasure Planet), but then do not do too well commercially. Other movies star your celebrity crush (Beyonce in Obsessed), but then do not get much love critically. Still other movies are recommended by friends (but friends can be idiots). And if you are like 43%* of people, you are not even aware of which movies are being released, yet alone which movies you should pay your hard earned money on.

I’ll save you the hassle of researching every movie, by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then I’ll tell you which movie you should watch in the theaters.

For the weekend of December 13th, the new films in wide release are The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas.

Hobbit 2: The Desolation of SmaugTyler Perry’s A Madea ChristmasWINNER
(1 point per category)
Clearest TitleSounds like a sequel to the Hobbit!Sounds like another Madea movie!Half point each for these recognizable titles.

Adventure/Fantasy
Rated PG-13 for extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images
Comedy
Rated PG-13 for sexual references, crude humor and language
And another half point each for these diverse genres.

Dwarves, Elves, and hobbit
Want to destroy a dragon
And there’s a wizard
No-nonsense black gal
Go spends Christmas with rednecks

The word dragon always wins the point in this category. Point for Hobbit.
Best TrailerPROS: This trailer brings us back to adventures in middle-earth, looks great
CONS: None really, if this is your type of movie
PROS: This was probably my favorite Madea trailer, entertaining
CONS: None really, if this is your type of movie
Hobbit 2 wins the point for best trailer.
Coolest Lead ActorMartin Freeman from The Hobbit and Sherlock. Tyler Perry from Madea films and Why Did I Get Married? The gentlemen will split the point for this round.
Best CastIan McKellen (X-Men), Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), Evangeline Lilly (Lost), and Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth)Larry the Cable Guy (the voice of Mater from Cars) and Kathy Najimy (the funny lady from Sister Act)The Hobbit wins best cast, but I’m going to regret that decision (Kathy Najimy is so funny!)
Best Street Cred
For the Production
Writer, director, and producer Peter Jackson also wrote, directed, and produced The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong. Writer, director, and producer Tyler Perry also wrote, directed, and produced a thousand of his own movies. And both gentlemen will split the point for best street cred.

So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, The Hobbit 2 scores 5 points and A Madea Christmas scores 2 points and a gold star.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if you’ve seen other Madea films, feel free to watch her Christmas. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: On paper, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the best movie to watch this weekend.
Conclusion 2: Each week I give a gold star to the movie with the best tagline. While this may be sacrilege to Tolkien fans, I think its tagline “Beyond darkness...beyond desolation...lies the greatest danger of all” will get beat out this week by Madea’s “Jolly. Fat. Old. Who were you expecting?”
Conclusion 3: Sherlock returns on January 19, 2014!

*Statistic is completely made up.
