New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some movies sound awesome (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), but then do not do too well commercially. Other movies star your celebrity crush (Sophia Loren in Nine), but then do not get much love critically. Still other movies are recommended by friends (but friends can be idiots). And if you are like 79%* of people, you are not even aware of which movies are being released, yet alone which movies you should pay your hard earned money on.

I’ll save you the hassle of researching every movie by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then I’ll tell you which movie you should watch in the theaters.

For the weekend of October 18th, the new films opening in wide release are Carrie, Escape Plan, and The Fifth Estate.

CarrieEscape PlanThe Fifth EstateWINNER
(1 point per category)
Clearest TitleRemake of the Stephen King classic?Action movie where people escape?Hmm, sci-fi or a horror movie?Carrie wins the point for clearest title. (She’s like Madonna or Ellen...only needs a first name to be famous)
Best Genre
and Rating
Horror
Rated R for bloody violence, disturbing images, language and some sexual content.
Action
Rated R for violence and language throughout
Biography
Rated R for language and some violence
Three Rated R movies in one week? Are you kidding me? Whose brilliant idea was that? A very sad 1/3 point for each film.
Best Plot
(in haiku form)
Girl is an outcast
She discovers her powers
But prom night goes wrong
Man goes to prison
To see if he can break out
But it’s a set-up
Man makes Wikileaks
Tells secrets. Gets in trouble
Based on true story
Carrie, while a remake, still has a marvelous plot. Point.
Best TrailerPROS: I forgot I was watching a trailer, completely caught up in the story
CONS: None
PROS: Two famous actors, neat “Count of Monte Cristo” type plot
CONS: Arnold’s accent for some (but I approve!)
PROS: The trailer made this story wildly enthralling
CONS: Maybe some political view cons for some
Wow, I actually highly approve of each trailer! Carrie and The Fifth Estate will split the point (but fine showing, Escape Plan).
Coolest Lead ActorChloe Grace Moretz from Kick Ass, Hugo, and Let Me In. Sylvester Stallone from Rocky, Rambo, and The Expendables.Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock and Star Trek into Darkness. I am officially on the Benedict Cumberbatch bandwagon. Point for him.
Best CastJulianne Moore (Crazy Stupid Love) and Judy Greer (13 Going on 30)Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator), Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ) and Amy Ryan (The Office)Laura Linney (The Truman Show) and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada)Solid casts all around too! I think Escape Plan will barely win this point.
Best Street Cred
For the Production
Director Kimberly Peirce also directed Boys Don’t Cry and Stop-Loss. Director Mikael Hafstrom also directed 1408 and The Rite. Director Bill Condon also directed Dreamgirls and Twilight: Breaking Dawn. Bill Condon also has street cred for being nominated for two Writing Oscars and winning one. He’ll take home this week’s street cred point.

So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, Carrie scores 2 and 5/6 points (and a gold star), The Fifth Estate scores 2 and 5/6 points, and Escape Plan scores 1 and 1/3 points.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if you liked The Expendables, feel free to watch Escape Plan. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: On paper, Carrie and The Fifth Estate are the best movies to watch this week. The tiebreak is in the next conclusion.
Conclusion 2: Each week I give a gold star to the movie with the best tagline. While I personally wanted The Fifth Estate to win the column this week, I couldn’t help but giggle at its tagline, “You can’t expose the world’s secrets without exposing yourself.” So Carrie’s “You Will Know Her Name” wins the gold star, the tie break, and the column this week.
Conclusion 3: Amy Ryans is an incredible actress. I wish more people knew her. While I’m sure other actors could do this if given the chance, I like how she can do comedy (The Office) and drama (oscar nominated for Gone Baby Gone).

*Statistic is completely made up.
