All right, Sam, don't jump...we won't force you to watch the new Heigl movie!

New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some people could pick a movie based on the title (Surprisingly, Disney's Robin Hood, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights- all have different genres). Some people watch trailers (misleading), some people listen to their friends (friends can be idiots), and some people only go to the movies if their Hollywood crush is on the screen (eight weeks until my book-crush The Hunger Games comes to theatres!).

More likely than not, each weekend there is a movie that you have never heard of in the theaters. I'll save you the hassle of researching every movie, by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then, I'll tell you which movie to watch.

For the weekend of January 27th, the new movies in wide release are The Grey, Man on a Ledge, and One for the Money.

The Grey Man on a Ledge One for the Money WINNER (1 point per category)
Clearest TitleThe Color Purple? Into the Blue? Color titles aren't clear at all. Now we are getting clearer. There's a man on a ledge. My mom may have talked to me about a book with this title. I swear I only heard about that book and haven't read it! Point for One for the Money.
Best Genre
and Rating
Action/Thriller:

Rated R for violence and disturbing images, and for pervasive language.
Crime/Thriller

Rated PG-13 for violence and brief strong language.
Comedy/Action

Rated PG-13 for violence, sexual references and language, some drug material, and partial nudity.
Two Thrillers. Two PG-13s. No originality this weekend- all will split the point.
Cleverest Tagline
(out of 5 stars)
"Live or Die on This Day"

Almost generic, but the confusing grammar structure makes it more interesting

3/5
"You can only push an innocent man so far"

Completely generic, unless it refers to pushing the man off the edge.

2/5
"She's looking for a few not-so-good men"

Now that's a pun and is funny!

4/5
Shoot, I didn't want to give this movie so many points, but it also has the best tagline.
Best Part of TrailerSo not generic! Wolves! I liked it! HOLY CRAP! It was pretty funny actually. Man on the Ledge has an amazing trailer. I was hooked.
Coolest Lead ActorLiam Neeson from Taken, Star Wars, and Schindler's List. Sam Worthington from Avatar, Clash of the Titans, and Terminator: Salvation. Katherine Heigl from Grey's Anatomy, Knocked Up, and a bunch of chick flicks. I'm sorry Liam, but I have to give Sam this point. (Have you all seen Avatar? Should have won Best Picture. I said it.)
Best CastDermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding) Edward Burns (Saving Private Ryan), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Ed Harris (The Truman Show) Daniel Sunjata (All My Children), John Leguizamo (Ice Age), Sherri Shepherd (The View), Debbie Reynolds (Singin in the Rain), Man on the Ledge and One for the Money split the point for the Best Cast.
Best Street Cred
For the Production
Writer and Director Joe Carnahan has also written and directed Smokin' Aces and The A-Team. Newcomer Director Asger Leth created the movie Ghosts of Cite Soleil Director Julie Anne Robinson has also directed The Last Song and a ton of TV shows. Mr. Carnahan has the most impressive resume. Point.

So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, Man on a Ledge scores 2 and 5/6 points, One for the Money scores 2 and 5/6 points, and The Grey scores 1 and 1/3 points.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if you are a man's man (like the trailer said), feel free to watch The Grey. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: We have a tie! I am going to choose Man on a Ledge as the best movie to watch this weekend (but if you are my mom's age, then please consider One for the Money as the winner).
Conclusion 2: The Descendants is also expanding this weekend. You may want to check that Oscar-nominated movie out too.
Conclusion 3: I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of Tom Houseman's pre-Oscar analysis this year at BOP. Well done.
