New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some people could pick a movie based on the title (Surprisingly, Big, Big Fish, and The Big Lebowski are not part of a trilogy). Some people watch trailers (misleading), some people listen to their friends (friends can be idiots), and some people only go to the movies if their Hollywood crush is on the screen (My crush Hermione Granger returns to the screen in two weeks!!!).

More likely than not, each weekend there is a movie that you have never heard of in the theaters. I'll save you the hassle of researching every movie by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then, I'll tell you which movie to watch.

For the weekend of July 1st, the movies in wide release are Larry Crowne, Monte Carlo, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Larry Crowne Monte Carlo Transformers: Dark of the Moon WINNER (1 point per category)
Clearest TitleNever heard of this guy. Have heard of this place. The third Transformers movie! Easy enough- Transformers wins the point for best title.
Best Genre
and Rating
Dramedy:

Rated PG-13 for brief strong language and some sexual content.
Romantic Comedy:

Rated PG for brief mild language.
Action:

Rated PG-13 for intense prolonged sequences of sci-fi action violence, mayhem and destruction, language, some sexuality, and innuendo.
Another no-brainer round, Action always trumps dramedies and romantic comedies. Another point for Transformers.
Cleverest Tagline
(out of 5 stars)
N/A

This movie doesn't need a tagline to get people to see it, because it stars Hanks and Roberts.

0/5
"She's having the time of someone else's life."

Kind of clever and intriguing.

2/5
N/A

This movie also doesn't need a tagline. The title says if you liked the first two films, you'll like this one.
Even easier than the first two rounds, Monte Carlo wins the point for this category.
Best Part of TrailerThe charm of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts could literally intoxicate someone. If you liked The Princess Diaries, you'll love this film. If you like excessive and prolonged sequences of mayhem and destruction, you'll love this film. I'm starting to experience a Hanks/Robert hangover right now. That trailer wins hands down.
Coolest Lead ActorTom Hanks for Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and The Da Vinci Code. Selena Gomez from Wizards of Waverly Place. Shia LaBeouf from Disturbia, Eagle Eye, and Holes. The fifth easy point in a row. Tom Hanks takes it all.
Best CastJulia Roberts (Pretty Woman) and Wilmer Valderamma (That 70s Show), and George Takei (Star Trek) Katie Cassidy (Click), Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Cory Monteith (Glee). Josh Duhamel (Life as We Know It), John Malkovich (Con Air), and Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy). This round is unfair as Julia Roberts is also a lead actor, but she'll give her film another quick point.
Best Street Cred
For the Production
Director Tom Hanks ?!?! and writers Tom Hanks and Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). Director and writer Thomas Bezucha also wrote and directed The Family Stone. Director Michael Bay has also directed Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, and the other Transformers. The first tough round because Michael Bay definitely has street cred for explosions, but I have to give the point to Hanks and Vardalos, who is also so charming!

So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, Larry Crowne scores 4 points, Transformers scores 2 points, and Monte Carlo scores 1 point.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if you have pent up testosterone, feel free to watch the new Transformers. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: On paper, the best movie to watch this weekend is Larry Crowne.
Conclusion 2: Director Bezucha has the coolest last name on the planet.
Conclusion 3: I'm going to get a Hanks/Roberts fix tonight at the theaters. Pray for me as I go through withdrawal tomorrow.
