New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some people could pick a movie based on the title (surprisingly, Cats and Dogs and The Truth about Cats and Dogs are completely different movies). Some people watch trailers (misleading), some people listen to their friends (friends can be idiots), and some people only go to the movies if their Hollywood crush is on the screen (Dear Catherine Zeta-Jones, the only time I watched the Oscars this decade was when you were nominated).

More likely than not, each weekend there is a movie that you have never heard of in the theaters. I'll save you the hassle of researching every movie, by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then, I'll tell you which movie to watch.

For the weekend of December 18th, the movies opening in wide release are Avatar and Did You Hear About the Morgans?

AvatarDid You Hear About the Morgans? WINNER (1 point per category)
CLEAREST TITLE A band of humans is pitted in a battle against a distant planet's indigenous population. Plot: Highly successful Manhattan couple has to enter the Witness Relocation Program Did You Hear About the Morgans? is exactly what someone would say if a highly successful couple disappeared....clever title, point.
BEST GENRE & RATING Sci-Fi/Action Rated PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language, and some smoking. Romantic Comedy Rated PG-13 for some sexual references and some momentary violence. Doesn't there seem to be a discrepancy between the content of what makes these films PG-13? No matter, movies shouldn't include smoking. Therefore, Did You Hear About the Morgans gets the point.
BEST TAGLINEFrom the director of Terminator and Titanic, James Cameron's Avatar. We're not in Manhattan anymore. So Avatar doesn't have a tagline, just some (impressive) credentials on the poster... so by default, Did You Hear About the Morgans has the best tagline.
BEST PART OF TRAILER THE MOVIE LOOKS AWESOME! (Visually and plotwise) Sarah Palin reference, interesting plot (for a romantic comedy), some funny moments I'm not even trying to jump on the Avatar bandwagon. I didn't even want to see it. Now, the trailer won me over! Point for Avatar.
COOLEST LEAD ACTOR Sam Worthington, from Terminator Salvation, will next be seen in Clash of the Titans. Sarah Jessica Parker, from Sex and the City, will next be seen in Sex and City 2. If I don't pick Sam Worthington as the coolest actor between these two, none of my guy friends would ever speak to me again. Point for Sam.
BEST CAST MEMBER Best known as Ripley from Alien, Sigourney Weaver ranked #81 on Empire Magazine's Sexiest Stars in Film History. Best known for Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, Hugh Grant ranked #43 on Empire Magazine's Sexiest Stars in Film History. Good looks aside, Sigourney Weaver is fricken' Ripley from Aliens! She easily wins this point.
BEST STREET CRED FOR THE PRODUCTION Director James Cameron has also directed Terminator, Aliens, and Titanic. Director Marc Lawrence has also directed Two Weeks Notice and Music and Lyrics. Directors aren't usually the only names that appear on a film's poster. Unless you are James Cameron. Forget the actors, point for Mr. Cameron.

So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, Avatar scores 4 points and Did You Hear About the Morgans scores 3 points.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if you are looking for an Oscar-worthy movie, come back next weekend for the Squeakquel to Alvin and the Chimpmunks. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: On paper, Avatar is the movie to watch this weekend.
Conclusion 2: The word Avatar means, "A temporary manifestation of a continuing entity." This definition may not be helpful, but Avatar is the perfect title for the plot of that movie.
Conclusion 3: James Cameron created the show Dark Angel in 2000, which is when I first fell in love with Jessica Alba.
