New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some people pick a movie based on the title (not good if you confuse 28 Days with 28 Days Later). Some people watch trailers (misleading), some people listen to their friends (friends can be idiots), and some people only go to the movies if their Hollywood crush is on the screen (Catherine Zeta-Jones, when are you coming out with your next movie???)

More likely than not, each weekend there is a movie that you have never heard of in the theaters. I'll save you the hassle of researching every movie by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then, I'll tell you which movie to watch.

For the weekend of October 2nd, the movies opening in wide release are: The Invention of Lying, Whip It, and Zombieland (along with the re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2).

The Invention of LyingWhip ItZombielandWinner
Clearest TitleProbably about a male, but the title is too cool for it to be a chick flick. Is this a Devo biopic? This sounds pretty self-explanatory.Zombieland easily gets this point.
Best Genre & RatingFantasy Comedy (PG-13) Drama Comedy (PG-13) Horror Comedy (R) These genres confuse me. All three movies split the point.
Best Tagline"In a world where everyone can only tell the truth...this guy can lie""Be your own hero""Nut Up or Shut Up"The plot of Whip It is still not clear, and what does "nut up" mean?? Invention of Lying wins this round.
Best Part of TrailerIt was actually really funny. Holy crap! This movie is about hardcore female roller-derby!Using hand-sanitizer after killing zombies.Since all 3 movies claim to be part comedy, the point goes to Invention of Lying for making me laugh.
Lead ActorRicky Gervais from the British (and original) version of The Office.Ellen Page from Juno fame. Woody Harrelson from some movies, but mostly from the show Cheers. I already know how these gentlemen are going to act in a movie. Point goes to Ms. Page, because I want to see what she can do after Juno.
Best Cast MemberJennifer Garner aka the quintessential female: Sydney Bristow (Alias) Kristen Wiig, aka Penelope, Gilly, and the Target Lady on SNL. Abigail Breslin, aka the little girl who screams in Little Miss Sunshine.Few people can trump Jennifer Garner- 1 point for her. And 1/2 a point for Zombieland for an amazing secret cameo (who is not Breslin)
Best Street Cred for the ProductionRicky Gervais is also the writer and director of Invention of Lying.Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with this movie. Jesse Eisenberg is a great (but not well known) actor. Check out all of his movies. Barrymore easily wins because A). She has been in over 50 movies, and B). She was cute in E.T.

So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, Invention of Lying scored 3 and 1/3 points, Whip It scored 2 and 1/3 points, and Zombieland scored 1 and 5/6 points.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if the word Zombieland sounds like your type of movie, go for it. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: Invention of Lying is the movie to watch this weekend.
Conclusion 2: If you research the TV show Cheers, the theme song will stay in your head for a week.
Conclusion 3: I still don't know what the phrase "nut up" means.
