We had a big announcement this week that rocked the comic world with Disney/Pixar buying Marvel Comics. Now, how will that affect the direct market (i.e. stores like mine)? It's way too early to tell. What I think it means in the short term is that the Disney Channels and Web sites now have access to all the Marvel content of the past 70 years (movies, TV shows, audio dramas and everything else). So that means more young eyeballs on comic-related material, which is a good thing as Disney/Pixar has been great at target marketing the youth demo for years, while Marvel (and DC) have struggled to attract the past two generations of kids into books. I think that this can only help the comic industry as a whole and the other companies had better get their ducks in a row in providing printed content that may attract some of the new eyeballs that come into the direct market shops AND the mass market bookstores. I'm very optimistic about this, frankly, but it won't affect me for at least six months to a year.
