Academy Awards 2009: Best Dressed

Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson was the hit of the night, dressed in a tiered dress from Roberto Cavalli and a necklace courtesy of Fred Leighton. Her hair was just the right touch of sassy, and the dress fit in all the right ways. The pale crème color was the perfect offset for her flawless skin, too.
Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. was swoon-worthy and quite a devilish looking chap in this classy looking tux. Women might swoon for playboy Tony Stark, but Downey has his own sense of style that makes him the best-dressed man of the evening.
Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway looks stunning in this creation from Armani Prive. Covered in Swarovski crystals, the dress was simple, yet elegant and her hairstyle was quite classy. If not for Henson's knock-it-out-of-the-park look, Hathaway could have been the belle of the ball.
Academy Award winner Kate Winslet

Some people weren't fond of Kate Winslet's updo, but I quite liked it and believed she looked as gorgeous as ever. Solo straps were a trend of the evening, and they can go very very wrong, but her look was all perfectly put together. This particular gown comes from Yves Saint Laurent, and the Oscar-winner's jewelry comes from Chopard. It was definitely the right call to go with the earring/bracelet set rather than making things over-complicated with a necklace.

Academy Award winner Sean Penn

Another fine-looking gentleman was Sean Penn, whose tux by Giorgio Armani made him look rakish but handsome as he accepted his Academy Award for Best Actor. His wife, Robin Wright Penn, looked lovely as well. With one of the more memorable speeches of the evening, it was important to look all kinds of classy.
Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz continues the trend of Oscar winners looking great. Though I wasn't very fond of her hair (someone on our Oscar blog commented that she was rocking the Anton Chigurh look), her dress by Balmain was stunning. This is exactly the kind of dress you might hope an Oscar nominee would wear if she thinks she has an inkling of a chance at appearing onstage for an acceptance speech.
Previous Academy Award winner Halle Berry

Halle Berry appeared onstage to present the Academy Award for Best Actress, and she blew the other five women appearing onstage with her away (more on that in our Worst Dressed section). In a brocade mermaid dress from Marchesa, she broke away from the crème and single shoulder strap trend to shine with her own style.
Academy Award nominee Brad Pitt

If you're going to be treated like Hollywood royalty, you should probably dress the part, at least. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were constantly sought out by the camera, and fortunately, Best Actor nominee Pitt looked fantastic in his tux from Tom Ford. He cleans up pretty darned well when he puts forth an effort.
Evan Rachel Wood

Even if she looks a little bit pissed off in this particular picture, Evan Rachel Wood showed that it's possible to wear a pale-colored dress even if your skin is almost the same color. Somehow, the fact that her skin almost perfectly matched the dress made it all the more striking - she's someone who knows how to use color to its best and most impacting effect.
The stars of Slumdog Millionaire

How can you not love the kid stars of Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire? Not only did they all look adorable, but they were clearly having a ton of fun, too.
