2009 Reader Awards: Best Book
March 17, 2009
We don't have a category for Best Books in the Calvins, so this is all you guys. The list is comprised of a who's who of people who are all richer than you. Leading the way is David Sedaris with his ode to pyromania, When You Are Engulfed in Flames. We don't always agree with Sedaris, but we can totally get behind him on the opinion that Def Leppard does rule. Of course, we haven't read this book, so maybe we've misread his intentions.
You got things right with the runner-up as BOP's favorite author and recent Newbery Medal winner Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book is a terrific dark fantasy that we look forward to watching in 3-D in several years (c'mon, Neil Jordan. You know you want to).
Third, fourth and fifth place go to the new hotness, the prior version and the guy who says one of them sucks while the other one is awesome. Stephenie Meyer's Twilight climax (note: not a booty call) is your third favorite, while J.K. Rowling's book of short stories, The Tales of Beedle the Bard sits in fourth. Stephen King takes time out from his busy schedule of trying to incite a catfight between Meyer and Rowling by placing fifth with Duma Key.
The rest of the top ten clearly displays one aspect of our readers: you like drunk chicks. Chelsea Handler's marvelously titled Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea edges out Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drining for sixth place. We presume they'll both end up talking to Barbara Walters about their substance abuse. For now, Walters is more focused on the residuals from your eighth place selection, Audition. To a larger point, we're pleased to see that some of you voted for Joss Whedon's work in Runaways, but we're disappointed that not a single one of you could throw a vote to Joe Hill's Locke & Key. We'll forgive you for this slight if you remember Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe when next year's voting rolls around.
