Movies I've Seen, Ranked
1. Hell or High Water
The acting, directing, dialogue, and use of music are all excellent. Really good film. Ben Foster should have gotten an Oscar nomination at least.
2. Deadpool
The first 30 minutes is absolutely hysterical, followed by some slow drama that is good for the character but leaves you wanting more action. Can't wait for a sequel.
3. Zootopia
This is pretty fun. The guard wolves unable to stop themselves from howling got the biggest laugh. Bateman's fox is a great character.
4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
    Excellent ending.
5. The Edge of Seventeen
This is pretty great all around, from the treatment of awkward teen behavior to the acting.
6. Captain America: Civil War
I enjoyed this a lot more than Age of Ultron, though some of the motivations are hard to swallow. Black Panther is a great add. Witch's accent still iffy.
7. Moana
I loved the grandmother and Moana's character. The visual effects are stunning. It's not quite the epic of The Little Mermaid, but it's a thoroughly entertaining pic.
8. La La Land
I didn't really like the dancing in the beginning, felt some of the middle was long, but that last 5 minutes is a perfect short film itself. Great acting.
9. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
The ATV scene and the spa scenes were two of my favorites of the year. Alice Wetterlund was great.
10. Everybody Wants Some!
The chemistry between all the characters is amazingly natural, and this feels like a movie made in the early 80s. Fun movie.
11. Hidden Figures
Great acting and chemistry, and I really enjoyed the behind the scenes history that I didn't know before.
12. The Jungle Book
Remarkable cgi - maybe not quite as good as Jurassic Park, but still really impressive. Baloo is great, the young Mowgli is ridiculously cute.
13. Kung Fu Panda 3
For me the highlights were the toying around with objects in the Hall of Heroes, and Oogway's scenes.
14. Moonlight (2016)
The acting was stellar, as is the cinematography and use of music and tone, but the movie didn't feel complete to me.
15. Keanu
I loved the slow motion footage of Keanu running through gunfire in the beginning, and the end gunfight was pretty good. Hit and miss tone.
16. Race
I think 42 has the slight edge over this as the better movie in this genre but it's still a good history lesson. I liked the coach's locker room speech about noise.
17. The Nice Guys
I thought the characters were great, but the plot is awfully convoluted.
18. 10 Cloverfield Lane
I could barely take the claustrophobic moments. The twist at the end is pretty fun.
19. Eddie the Eagle
Most of this is typical light comedy but the climax scene is fantastic and may qualify among my favorite scenes of the year.
20. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
The first one was funnier but I did like Efron's character more in this one.
21. Sing
I liked the Ash character a lot - Set It All Free is a great song - and Johnny's criminal father. It's amusing.
22. The Founder
This portrayal of Kroc isn't as bad as the reviews suggested, he's a hard dealer but has high standards.
23. Arrival
The direction is great, the translation is interesting, but Renner is completely underused and then used in an uncomfortable subplot with a major plot cheat.
24. Star Trek Beyond
Everything about this one felt old and repeated. I did like Sulu's scenes, particularly the nosedive launch, and the Sabotage battle.
25. Hail, Caesar!
Great visual work as usual for the Coens. I liked Josh Brolin and his character but the distinct lack of plot made it feel like a waste, especially at the end.
26. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
This sequel is more action/on-the-run oriented than the previous do-more-with-less version of him, but here we basically have Reacher doubled with Smulders.
27. Ip Man 3
There are few good fights in this, especially the docks/warehouse scene. Zhang Jin is excellent. Otherwise the pace tends to be slow.
28. Finding Dory
Not quite as good as Finding Nemo but Dory is a great character, as is Hank the octopus. The echolocation/pipes and final truck sequence are great.
29. Bad Moms
This feels like an appropriate sequel to Mean Girls. I didn't think Kathryn Hahn's character fit right, but her motivational speech was good.
30. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
I thought the characters were great (except for the anemic villain), gun battles were exciting, but it somehow lacked an epic feel in the end. Haley Bennett is a looker.
31. Storks
The wolves as a whole character were fun, and the silent fight with the penguins at the end was a great scene. Plus, the babies are just cute.
32. Office Christmas Party
I loved Olivia Munn and the giant sumo costumes.
33. Ghostbusters (2016)
The movie isn't as bad as it appeared to be from the trailer, mostly thanks to Kate McKinnon.
34. Patriots Day
Pretty standard Wahlberg thriller, but a good reminder of the week's events in history, and a great tribute to the people of Mass.
35. Fences
Way too talky. I don't like movies that feel like filmed stage plays. The acting is good and the characters are interesting, but it's not a movie I want to watch again.
36. Jason Bourne
The slightly interesting element of adding Bourne's father is overshadowed by a complete rehash of what's come before.
37. Hacksaw Ridge
The first part is pretty hokey, the initial war scenes obsessed with head shots, but the solo rescue scenes are worth it.
38. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Visually impressive, but this seems to be an exercise in breaking as many things on screen as possible.
39. Kubo and the Two Strings
Excellent animation technique, and the aunts are intimidating villains, but the tone is a downer.
40. Triple 9
This is a pretty solid heist/cop drama. Casey Affleck is good but Woody Harrelson picks an odd speech pattern.
41. The Infiltrator
Well-acted, though not always very riveting.
42. Deepwater Horizon
The effects of the failure and resulting devastation are pretty impressive.
43. Why Him?
I laughed once. (What the hell room is this?) The rest made me hate modern mobile gaming/California culture.
44. The Secret Life of Pets
Jenny Slate as the Pomeranian wins this one. Max's movement animation is great. I liked Taylor Swift's opening too.
45. Bridget Jones's Baby
Shouldn't we be beyond dating insecurities as a go-to for rom-coms by now? Sarah Solemani is fun.
46. Passengers
Some pretty cool visuals. Not as bad as the reviews indicate.
47. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Bravo for going darker than the typical quirky fantasy, but I found the quirkiness too forced to the point of being annoying.
48. Allied
Great cinematography, and I loved the tension of the final scene, but Pitt's acting wasn't believable and Cotillard wasn't appealing.
49. The Accountant
There's an impressive hand-to-hand fight with an unnamed thug in the final battle. Anna is also fun.
50. Inferno
This entry lacks the epic adventure feel of The Da Vinci Code.
51. A Monster Calls
I didn't expect to like this at first but the monster's stories won me over because they're not simple and nice.
52. Bleed for This
The story is impressive but the boxing scenes aren't as thrilling as in Rocky movies.
53. Doctor Strange
Well produced, but it never felt part of the Avengers universe. My other complaint is that one shouldn't be able to be halfway in another dimension and affect our own: in or out.
54. Don't Breathe
Effective tension throughout, and some pretty cool cinematography.
55. Manchester by the Sea
Despite the tragic flashback and a great interaction with Michelle Williams, I was mostly bored and unsatisfied with lack of denouement.
56. Free State of Jones
Great cinematography, acting, and interesting history, though it does feel like a copy of Cold Mountain in the beginning.
57. Trolls
I thought the idea of Bergens wanting to eat Trolls was pretty dark, and I wasn't really into the music. That is except for Timberlake's song, which served as a really fun opening to the Oscars.
58. Kevin Hart: What Now?
The vignette at the beginning is funny, but some of the material in the first half hour seems to mock disabled people. The rest is okay, but I'm glad I didn't pay for the show or a theater ticket.
59. Loving
The pacing is so very slow, and there's no significant villain; even the mean sheriff and judge are amenable.
60. Independence Day: Resurgence
The pacing is very strong and the visual effects are pretty good.
61. Blair Witch
This is a faithful sequel to the original, but has less punch due to the first's originality. The static noises during footage transitions are still annoying. I thought Lights Out was scarier.
62. Central Intelligence
I actually thought Johnson's character was pretty unusual in a good way and he did well with it. Typical noisy buddy comedy though.
63. The Legend of Tarzan
Skarsgard makes an impressive Tarzan, and I liked Samuel L. Jackson's character.
64. War Dogs
Some moderately funny moments with the predictable relationship collapse at the end.
65. Now You See Me 2
The inevitable can't-fail outcome deflates the thrill of the movie. The first movie had more exciting magic effect, but the frisking scene was pretty nifty.
66. X-Men: Apocalypse
Quicksilver's slo-mo scene is again the best part of the film. The end seems to adopt anime logic - whoever screams loudest wins.
67. The Conjuring 2
The unusually loud ghosts are both alarming and amusing. The demon looking like Marilyn Manson is just distracting.
68. Criminal
A lot of this seems like a ripoff of the Bourne movies, from the CIA observation room to the head issues. It's an okay thriller.
69. Sully
Not quite as harrowing or personal as Flight, this is still an interesting portrayal of all the steps pilots take that passengers never see.
70. Snowden
Agree with him or not (and I don't think his justification is convincing), movies like this help capture the developments of the story in a way that strings of news articles can't.
71. Lights Out
The original short is one of the best horrors I've ever seen. This is more conventional, but the depiction of Diana is suitably creepy.
72. Keeping Up with the Joneses
Typical of this genre. Spy, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith are still far better. Hamm is really the only character that seems to have any development.
73. Ben-Hur (2016)
Pacing is too slow in the beginning, and I'm not convinced by the conclusion emotions. The sea battle and chariot sequences are tense, but I'd much rather watch Gladiator again instead.
74. Hands of Stone
The final fight is the best part of this.
75. Zoolander 2
This is the first movie I can remember that made me feel old, especially since they stressed aging. Fun and stupid. And oh hey, there's Sting.
76. Nocturnal Animals
Michael Shannon may have been good but the disjointed directing made it seem like he was prepping a twist that never materialized. I really don't think Adams added much. Overall a miserable movie w
77. Assassin's Creed
Pointless. The games are great, and I don't know if they can't translate to film, but this was a failed effort.
78. Gods of Egypt
I was really, really surprised at how entertaining this turned out to be. The effects are much better than shown in the trailer, and it's better than recent Clash of the Titans etc.
79. Mechanic: Resurrection
As usual Statham delivers some decent fight choreography...and lousy dialogue.
80. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
I'm not the right demographic for this, but for a pre-teen audience I thought the writing was decent and better than the previous movie.
81. Max Steel
Slow pacing in the beginning and the change in volume from loud to soft to loud was annoying enough that I had the movie on mute most of the time.
82. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Slow, but better than Rock the Kasbah. Billy Bob Thornton is fun, but Christopher Abbott is pretty great.
83. Miss Sloane
This isn't what lobbying in DC actually looks like. Regardless of how well Chastain sells the character, the character is unredeemable and makes for a laborious movie experience.
84. Florence Foster Jenkins
Well produced, and an interesting mention of syphilis, but I didn't find it amusing in the way its target demo might.
85. The Huntsman: Winter's War
Hemsworth's accent makes him sound like Gerard Butler, Chastain's accent just sounds like she doesn't know what she's doing.
86. Barbershop: The Next Cut
The message here was interesting to watch post-election.
87. Pete's Dragon (2016)
This just didn't capture the charm of the original musical the way that this year's Jungle Book did.
88. The Purge: Election Year
This should be called The Purge: Endless stupid decisions. Not having a rooftop sniper standoff is a missed opportunity.
89. The Shallows
Open Water was darker in tone. I guess this was supposed to be inspirational be that made it feel paint by numbers.
90. Sausage Party
I laughed a couple times but it felt like an excuse to combine animation with swearing for shock value rather than make an animated comedy with no limits. Firewater was my favorite.
91. The Brothers Grimsby
Utterly disgusting but I laughed a few times.
92. The Girl on the Train (2016)
They make the lead character (all characters, really) so unsympathetic that it was too late to come around with the twist. I was disappointed with the acting, too.
93. Mother's Day
It's not hokey, but still feels like pandering. Bad Moms was better on the same point, and more entertaining.
94. Ice Age: Collision Course
Same old same old - you enjoy the relationship angst and running from an enemy, or you don't.
95. London Has Fallen
The plot is chaotic and unbelievable, the dialogue is weak, but there's a pretty long string of impressive gunplay action to hold your attention.
96. Hardcore Henry
Obviously geared toward gamers, I didn't expect to enjoy anything about this, but the use of music was amusing.
97. The Boss
Moderately amusing but nothing near Spy.
98. Miracles from Heaven
Preachy, of course. Erin Brokovich was better in this genre, of course.
99. The Finest Hours
The Coast Guard deserves movies but this one had no dramatic punch. And I don't know what Casey Affleck was going for but it didn't work.
100. The Witch
I'd give this a full letter grade higher were it not for the overbearing music. As it is it has a vibe like The Shining, and will bolster fear of the woods.
101. The Choice
Palmer and Walker are well cast and it plays like a romantic fantasy, but it's too much of a fantasy.
102. The Light Between Oceans
A thoroughly heartbreaking and depressing movie experience.
103. The BFG
The first half of the movie is like a cgi proof of concept with no intriguing substance behind it, too sleepy to hold interest. At least it's more elegant than Alice Through the Looking Glass.
104. The Forest
Some frights but the ending doesn't make a lot of sense.
105. The Boy
I'm not a horror fan and I was surprised that this didn't turn out to be unsettling like I expected. I also liked Lauren's character.
106. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
This is like a mashup of Black Hawk Down and Lone Survivor. It's not quite as good as the others, since it feels more procedural despite the character development.
107. Risen
The practical effects of the events around Jesus is a pretty interesting story approach.
108. Alice: Through the Looking Glass
I think Wasikowski was good but it was hard to tell through all the noise and visual distraction.
109. The Divergent Series: Allegiant
Great visual effects with the drones, and I suppose there's comment about propaganda and social order here, but the dialogue is just so hard to suffer.
110. The 5th Wave
More survival drama than action, Moretz does a decent job but it's still not in par with The Hunger Games style teen thrillers.
111. Money Monster
An implausible script with poor character, and it just wasn't very thrilling or satisfying.
112. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Nicely shot and Heathcote and Lily James are beauties, but I didn't like the noise or Sam Riley.
113. Suicide Squad
There's no real villainy here, just mouthy complainers. Will Smith is pretty good. How did they expect to make money after licensing all that music?
114. Ride Along 2
More of the same - tough talk and loud comic relief. Bad Boys and The Other Guys are still the tops in this genre.
115. Jane Got a Gun
Some decent gunfighting but there are a lot of cliche elements in this drama.
116. Warcraft
I would say this was better than Dungeons & Dragons with Marlon Wayans and Jeremy Irons.
117. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
All these characters are lunatics, except for the daughter.
118. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Get Him to the Greek is the superior version of this.
119. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
The direction was nonsense, fight choreography was lousy, and I couldn't understand Lex Luthor's motivations. Wonder Woman was cool but out of nowhere. Marvel does it so much better.
120. Nine Lives (2016)
This starts off like a cheap version of Adam Sandler's Click and doesn't get much better. Constant cat howling is harsh on the ears.
121. How to Be Single
I laughed at Rebel Wilson's pro/con list. The rest is irritating desperation masquerading as romantic comedy.
122. The Perfect Match
Dialogue, plot, and production in this movie made it feel like an amateur effort.
123. Dirty Grampa
I get what they were trying to do with the man-up thing, but it fell flat. It did make me want to get old quick and find Audrey Plaza though.
124. The Wild Life (2016)
Weak animation like it was a made for tv. I put it on mute 10 minutes in.
125. Fifty Shades of Black
I watched this all the way through, which makes it superior to Norm, I guess. Nobody should try to confirm that though.
126. Norm of the North
I almost never quit a movie, no matter how bad. I shut this off 30 minutes in. Lame cgi and worse dialogue.
