Quartet Added to Inkheart

Actors Helen Mirren, Andy Serkis, Rafi Gavron and Sienna Guillory have been added to the cast of New Line's family fantasy Inkheart. The quartet joins Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany and Jim Broadbent in the story about a father (Fraser) who magically brings book characters to life when he read stories out loud to his daugter. Iain Softley is directing the movie from David Linsay-Abaire's script. Production is scheduled to begin next month in Italy, before moving on to London.

Mendel Inks Producing Deal with New Line

New Line Cinema has signed Barry Mendel to produce Inkheart, the first in author Cornelia Funke's children's fantasy trilogy. The film will star Brendan Fraser as a father who has the magical ability to bring characters from books to life just by reading the stories aloud to his daughter. But when dad is kidnapped by some bad guys from the bedtime stories, his daughter and her friends try to save him. Others in the cast include Paul Bettany and Jim Broadbent.

Director Softley has Heart

Iain Softley (The Skeleton Key) has signed on to direct Inkheart for New Line Cinema. The film is an adaptation of the children's book by Cornelia Funke, with a screenplay that is being handled by David Lindsay-Abaire. The story centers on a girl whose father has the power to bring characters from books to life simply by reading them aloud. When an evil ruler and his band of brigands from a kids' fable kidnap the father, the girl and her friends must work together to save him.

Playwright to adapt Inkheart

New Line Cinema has hired playwright David Lindsay-Abaire to write the theatrical adaptation of the Cornelia Funke fantasy novel Inkheart. The book spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Children's Chapter bestseller list in Fall of 2003 and tells the story of a little girl whose father has the power to bring characters from books to life by reading their stories aloud. When a villain from a rare children's book kidnaps her father, our young heroine and her friends must venture out to save him.
