Movie News for
King Kong

Release Date: December 14, 2005

Kong less than mighty

Stunning forecasters and industry experts, King Kong had a suprisingly slow start on its first day. Its Wednesday debut amounted to $9.7 million in receipts from North America, though it did find a respectable $8 million internationally. Even though studio executives from Universal are saying that they're okay with this result due to kids still being in school and bad weather probably taking its toll across the country, there's not much we can do to sugar-coat this number. It's exceptionally disappointing, particularly given the massive media push and strong reviews the film has been receiving. It's not all over just yet, though. Much will depend on whether the film follows a Lord of the Rings trajectory (which would probably mean a $50 million five-day). If it can pull a Shrek 2, however, which looked disappointing on Wednesday but then came up with more than $100 million from Friday-to-Sunday.

Composer shuffle for Kong

Just two months before the movie is due to be released, Howard Shore has left as composer for King Kong. Director Peter Jackson issued a statement that said the departure came due to creative differences. The two had previously worked together on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. James Newton Howard will take Shore's place.
