Sony picks up animated film

Sony Pictures acquired U.S. distribution rights to Planet 51, an animated family film from Shrek scribe Joe Stillman. Actors lending their voices include Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jessica Biel, Gary Oldman, Justin Long, John Cleese and Seann William Scott.

The Rock rockets to orbit

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jessica Biel, Seann William Scott and Justin Long will lend their voices to Planet 51, New Line's first venture into the world of CG-animation. The film is about a group of people who fear an alien invasion on some distant planet. Johnson will play an astronaut from Earth who warns the people of an impending invasion. Long will be the local who the astronaut befriends, Biel will be the local's love interest and Scott will play the local's sidekick. It was written by Joe Stillman (Shrek) and will be directed by Jorge Blanco.

New Line journeys to Planet 51

For the first time in its 40-year history, New Line is doing something different: animation. The studio acquired the rights to the $60 million feature Planet 51 from Ilion Animation Studios. Expected to be released in 2009, the film is about the inhabitants of Planet 51, who fear an alien invasion. The film was written by Joe Stillman (Shrek) and will be directed by Jorge Blanco.
