Cromwell joins Spidey gang

James Cromwell will play Captain Stacy, father of Gwen Stacy, in Spider-Man 3. Sam Raimi is directing the third installment of the film. In the comic books, Stacy dies a heroic death when he saves a child during a battle between Spider-Man and a super-villain. Gwen, who happens to be Peter Parker's love interest, blames Spidey for her father's death. Cromwell joins cast members Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Franco, Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church and Teresa Russell.

Russell signs for Spider-Man

Theresa Russell has joined the cast of Spider-Man, where she will play the wife of Flint Marko, aka the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). The villainous couple also apparently has a daughter. Sam Raimi is directing the film from a screenplay by Alvin Sargent (though Raimi conceived the story with his brother, Ivan Raimi). Shooting will begin this month. One-time "Black Widow" star Theresa Russell has become ensnared in Spidey's web. The actress has joined the cast of "Spider-Man 3" for Columbia Pictures. Russell will play Mrs. Marko, the wife of Flint Marko, aka the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). Plot details from Alvin Sargent's screenplay are scarce, though it is known that the villainous couple has a daughter. Sam Raimi is helming the movie, and he co-wrote the story with his brother, Ivan Raimi. Shooting is set to start this month.

Spidey gets a new girl

Bryce Dallas Howard is negotiating to join the cast of Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 3. She would play Gwen Stacy, the girl who takes the place of Mary Jane in Peter Parker's heart. Along with Howard, stars of the film include the returning Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. The new villains will be Thomas Haden Church as Sandman and Topher Grace as Venom. Sam Raimi is once again directing, this time from a screenplay by Alvin Sargent. Filming will begin this week. In the Spider-Man mythology, Gwen is a friend of Mary Jane's who becomes Peter's girlfriend. Trouble is, she hates Spider-Man due to the fact that her father was killed in the middle of a battle between the webcrawler and Doctor Octopus.

Topher Grace joins Spidey and Co.

Topher Grace has joined the cast of Spider-Man 3, according to an announcement from director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. He's set to star alongside Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco and Thomas Haden Church, who will portray the villain. Very little has been revealed about Alvin Sargent's screenplay at this point, but the movie is set to go into production in early 2006. It is currently scheduled for release on May 4, 2007.

Church a villain for Spider-Man 3

Thomas Haden Church, who recently gained a great deal of positive attention for his supporting performance in the Academy Award-nominated Sideways, will play one of the two potential villains in Spider-Man 3, director Sam Raimi's next installment in the franchise. The identity of the new villain is not officially being revealed (though you may be able to uncover the answer if you poke around for some interviews with various people involved in the project).

Sargent to write Spider-Man

Sony has made a seven-figure deal with Alvin Sargent to write Spider-Man 3, giving him an option to write the fourth movie as well. He has already started working on the script to the third film, which currently is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2007. The story has been crafted by Sargent with director Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi.
