Rapper DMX continues to increase his role as a major player in Hollywood with this film. James Gibson makes his feature film debut by adapting the 1974 novel by Donald Goines to the silver screen. At the helm is veteran director Earnest Dickerson.
Author Donald Goines is not a familiar name to most people, even those that consider themselves well read. Goines was a gangster who was in and out of prison in his early life; he wrote his first two novels behind bars. When he was released from prison, in 1970, he put his efforts toward writing and created 16 more works before being shot to death in 1974. Another talented life cut tragically short.
The story is about an up-and-coming reporter (David Arquette), who witnesses the murder of a gang leader named King David AKA King Cobra (DMX). The reporter investigates the murder and comes across King David’s journal. He reads the journal and pieces together the rise and fall of the gang leader through a series of flashbacks.

The movie is the first from DMX’s film production company, Bloodline Films. Fox Searchlight picked up the distribution rights for the film. Normally, Fox Searchlight distributes to limited cities, but they are planning to make this a wider distribution than normal. I think they are pretty confident in DMX’s ability to bring is some decent audiences. I am too. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
