Position Staff In Brief
3/12 Les Winan Effectively genre busting. Don't read anything before you go.
24/169 Max Braden Not quite as good as I'd hoped, but this is still inventive and funny. The dancing in the cabin and control room is among my favorite scenes this year.

Few writers have shown an ability to tweak and play with the conventions of genre like Joss Whedon. From his early work subverting vampire movies to recent works taking on science fiction and westerns (and musicals!), Whedon hasn't found a type of entertainment he couldn't rip apart and turn on its head.

For his first foray into non-adapted film in almost a decade, Whedon takes on the spooky cabin in the woods horror film titled, appropriately enough, Cabin in the Woods. Although few details are available at this time, we do know that he's co-writing with Drew Goddard, who penned Cloverfield, along with several episodes of Buffy, Angel, Alias and Lost. Goddard will also direct for his feature film debut.

It's difficult to know exactly what to expect at this point, with no cast announced, or even a possible plot. However, it's a good bet that Whedon and Goddard are planning on gutting both some unsuspecting teens, as well as a genre. (Reagen Sulewski/BOP)

After sitting on the shelf for several years, the movie filmed in March of 2009 is finally scheduled for release. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that writer/producer Joss Whedon has a little film called The Avengers ready to tear up the box office later this year. Whatever the reason, BOP thanks the movie deities that we can finally watch one of our most anticipated films on the release schedule. Our unhealthy love of Joss Whedon has never been a secret.

What is The Cabin in the Woods? Well, we finally have an answer to that. We must be careful what we say here in order to avoid spoilers, though. If you have seen the Rubik's Cube house in the movie poster, you already have a good idea that this will not be a straightforward film.

Ostensibly, The Cabin in the Woods is a horror flick. A group of teenagers embark upon a rustic excursion as a much deserved college break. Hollywood tradition indicates that during this trip, the sexy teens hook up a lot and then die screaming, hopefully in that order. The catch is that there is a reality show-ish aspect to this holiday. Little do the sexy teens know that their every move is being monitored via hidden cameras and that their fates are tied to a much higher purpose in the grand scheme.

The Cabin in the Woods has been praised as one of the freshest twists on Hollywood convention in recent memory. People gush over the script and the presence of Whedon and Goddard should be more than enough justification for BOP's readers to watch. If you are still on the fence about the film, the presence of Chris Hemsworth (aka Thor) in a Before He Was Famous role should provide further incentive. (David Mumpower/BOP)
