Leonard Cohen first appeared on the music scene in 1967, and since that time has established himself as a unique songwriter/poet and an iconic symbol of the counter-culture that emerged in that era. His distinctive and haunting music has been one of the singular legacies of the '60s. This documentary takes a look at his songs, poetry and life.
Director Lian Lunson traveled to Sydney to film a Leonard Cohen tribute show called "Came So Far For Beauty". It took place at the Sydney Opera House, and was organized by music producer Hal Willner. Lunson took the opportunity this afforded to gather behind-the-scenes interviews and images of live performances from the event. Musicians who were there included, Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton, Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson, Jarvis Cocker, The Handsome Family, Julie Christensen and Perla Battala. Cohen himself performed Tower of Song along with U2. Along with this footage, Lunson also features candid interviews with Cohen himself, where he uses his artwork, poetry and personal photographs to look at his development as a creative type.
