An Academy Award nominee in 2004 for Best Foreign Language Film, this Swedish product has received rave reviews as being a highly realistic portrayal of life in European boarding schools.

The story centers on a young trouble-maker named Erik Ponti (Andreas Wilson). Abused by his stepfather and frequently ignored by his mother, he strikes out to find attention with violence. When he gets into a fight at his local school, he is expelled, which leads his mother to enroll him in a private boarding school. Although Erik does make one good friend in his roommate Pierre (Henrik Lundstrom), he soon comes to realize what the pecking order is in this institution. Erik simply wishes to be left alone so that he can eventually graduate in peace, but the fact of the matter is that the senior students rule the underclassmen. Since Erik is strong-minded and doesn't listen to what the seniors have to say, the older boys make a pact to make the young man's life a pure living hell.

Evil, aka Ondskan in its native Sweden, was directed by Mikael Hafstrom, who makes his English-language debut with the Clive Owen thriller Derailed. Given its pedigree and buzz, Evil looks to be a strong player in the art house community. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
