Position Staff In Brief
19/200 Max Braden The dialogue is very rich. I was expecting something upbeat, but it's more bittersweet. Better in its genre than Dead Poets Society I think.

The History Boys originated as a play that became extremely popular in Great Britain. After crossover success in the United States and a bevy of Tony Awards, the stage production is now coming to the big screen just in time for the build up to the Academy Awards. Given its pedigree, it's likely to be a strong contender for any number of critics circle prizes and guild nominations.

Most of the principals who popularized the play are onboard for the movie production. Nicholas Hytner (who won a Tony for his work onstage) will direct from Alan Bennett's adaptation of his own work. Bennett was previously nominated for an Academy Award for his adaptation of his play The Madness of King George, which Hytner also helmed. Tony Award winners Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour will reprise their roles, along with cast members such as Samuel Anderson, Samuel Barnett, Stephen Campbell Moore, Dominic Cooper, Sacha Dawan, Andrew Knott and Clive Merrison.

The movie's story follows a classroom of sixth-form history students who are unruly yet highly intelligent. Competition and rivalry are explored as the young men vie for undergraduate spots at Oxford. The faculty they must deal with are formidable. There's a maverick English teacher (Griffiths) who is consistently at odds with a young, clever supply instructor (Moore) whose purpose is to increase test scores. The headmaster of the school (Merrison) is obsessed with his charges attaining results, and their history teacher (de la Tour) believes him to be a fool. The movie will look at the clashes between the faculty and explore the process of education and its importance to adolescent youths. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
