Eli Roth started a reputation for himself with the splatter film Cabin Fever. Although the movie received middling reviews, horror buffs seemed to find that it contained some of the humor and gore in the tradition of Sam Raimi, with many people comparing it to the Evil Dead family of films. Now, he follows that project up with Hostel, a movie that has been receiving superb buzz amongst fans of the genre.

This time around, Roth takes the same sort of fresh-faced, youthful characters that were the centerpiece of Cabin Fever, but instead of putting them in the woods, he sends them off to a very unfamiliar world - that of Eastern Europe. The story has three backpackers who journey to a Slovakian city in hopes of experiencing a hedonistic adventure, but the trip quickly degenerates to a hellish experience.

As with Cabin Fever, the violence is certain to be gruesome and hair-raising. Roth has said in interviews that he partially worked the story from the sickest thing you can find on the Internet, and thus far, he is certainly pleasing the audience for which the film is targeted. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
