Position Staff In Brief
62/65 Kim Hollis Completely incoherent, with dialogue that is cringeworthy.
150/159 David Mumpower I love the videogames but this mess of an adaptation is incoherent bordering on impenetrable.

Based on the uber-creepy survival horror video game franchise from Konami, Silent Hill looks to be an intriguing translation to the big screen. Directed by Christophe Gans, who earlier helmed the terrific French horror/thriller Brotherhood of the Wolf, the movie has an excellent cast and a screenplay by the talented Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction).

Radha Mitchell stars as Rose, a woman who is having difficulty accepting the fact that her daughter, Sharon (Jodelle Ferland), is dying from a fatal disease. Despite the fact that her husband (Sean Bean) disagrees with her decision, Rose flees with Sharon with the plan to take her to a faith healer. As she makes the journey, Rose somehow winds up driving through a portal in reality. She finds herself in an uncanny and deserted town called Silent Hill.

Finding herself lost in a strange place with her mother, Sharon disappears. Still, Rose believes she sees her daughter's silhouette on buildings throughout the town. Rose realizes that the town is…different somehow. It's inhabited by exceedingly strange and terrifying creatures, and there is an eerie living darkness that transforms everything it touches into something horrible. The human inhabitants still in the town are trapped and cannot escape. Their battle against the impending Darkness is not going well.

A cop named Cybil joins Rose in an attempt to bring her and Sharon back home, and Rose continues her search, she finds out more about the odd history of the town and realizes that her daughter is simply a pawn in a much greater game. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
