Bonnie and Clyde they ain’t.

This was the tagline for the 1977 comedy classic, Fun With Dick and Jane. The movie starred Jane Fonda and George Segal along with a rarely employed thespian named Ed McMahon in a co-starring role. The premise was simple. A moderately wealthy, successful couple has just finished redecorating their dream home with the finishing touch, a lavish swimming pool. To their shock, Dick finds himself unexpectedly terminated at work, leaving the couple some $70,000 in debt with no source of income other than an unemployment check. In order to pay their expenses, the unlikely duo embarks on a life of crime with hilarious results.

Now, over a quarter of a century later, Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni are poised to re-make the classic film. The general premise is still the same. A couple find themselves poor and desperate after the husband’s job is lost. It seems that as a spokesperson for a huge corporation, Carrey’s character inadvertently participated in some behavior which is frowned upon to say the least. Out of work and facing a mounting pile of bills, the duo decide to embark upon a criminal lifestyle to pay them.

Noted television director Dean Parisot (The Tick, The Job, ER, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Monk) offered a hilarious take on science fiction nerds and self-important, over-the-hill actors in Galaxy Quest. He is now set to create an equally funny unlikely-criminals movie using a script from BOP fave Judd “J’accuse!” Apatow, the creator of Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. Any film starring Jim Carrey naturally presents itself is a potential blockbuster but considering the talent behind the scenes, this looks to be a standout even by Carrey’s lofty standards.
