46/126 Kim Hollis Great slapstick humor combined with impressive physical comedy.

What the world needs now is a family of kung-fu masters applying their sweet science to the sport of soccer. Should Harvey Weinstein ever relent and finally allow its release, North American audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy such an experience.

Shaolin Soccer is a story about Golden Leg Hung, an injured former star player whose career is stolen from under him a scheming evil-doer. As his life degenerates into a miserable existence of bottom-feeding, this man encounters Sing, a young man with incredibly powerful feet. He immediately forms a wild scheme to return to glory. He will teach the boy how to use the martial arts to excel at the world's most popular sport.

The problem with this is that a soccer team needs more than one player. Fortuitously, Sing has a set of incompetent, equally unhappy brothers searching for meaning in their lives. He also knows a dissheveled young woman, who also happens to have the type of dextrous hands that are perfect for a goalie...or a girlfriend. The group determines that they are best served becoming shaolin soccer stars.

Shaolin Soccer redefines quirky humor. If the concept described above makes you laugh, there is a lot to like in this former recipient of the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Picture. If the above makes you scratch your head, run away screaming right now. Shaolin Soccer is even weirder than its description sounds. (David Mumpower/BOP)
