Actress Peg Entwistle hurls herself from the 50-foot tall H of the Hollywood sign. She dies on impact.

1963:

Shirley Jackson's novel is brought to the big screen as The Haunting debuts. The film finished near the top of BOP's 50 Favorite Horror Films

1998:

The Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker film Rush Hour opens. Setting the mark for September openings, the New Line offering takes in $33 million from 2,638 screens. Reese Witherspoon's Sweet Home Alabama narrowly takes the honor away four years later.
